University of Montevallo - UM Overview

  About Greek Life at UM

Montevallo is a small liberal arts university in central Alabama — one of the few public liberal arts schools in the country — and its Greek system reflects that intimate campus feel. This isn't a massive SEC flagship with thousands of students rushing in the fall. It's a tighter-knit community where Greek life is visible and active, but the scale is smaller and more personal than what you'd find at Alabama or Auburn.

The system runs through two main governing bodies: IFC and Panhellenic cover the historically white fraternities and sororities, while the NPHC organizations round out the council structure with Divine Nine representation on campus. Fraternities like Alpha Tau Omega, Lambda Chi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Lambda, and FIJI (Phi Gamma Delta) make up the IFC side. Panhellenic includes familiar national names like Chi Omega, Alpha Delta Pi, Delta Gamma, Alpha Gamma Delta, and Phi Mu. On the NPHC side, you've got Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, and Zeta Phi Beta.

Recruitment at a school this size tends to be more relaxed and conversational compared to the high-production rush process you see at bigger schools. Formal recruitment happens in the fall for most Panhellenic chapters, and IFC chapters typically do informal recruitment as well. Because everyone kind of knows everyone at Montevallo, the process often feels less intimidating and more like getting to know people you've probably already crossed paths with.

Greek chapters here don't dominate campus the way they might at a large state school, but they're still a meaningful part of social and campus life. Philanthropy events, mixers, and chapter-sponsored activities show up consistently throughout the academic year. Housing situations vary by chapter — some have dedicated houses or lodge spaces, but this isn't a school with a sprawling Greek Row in the traditional sense.

For a school Montevallo's size, having both IFC, Panhellenic, and NPHC representation speaks to how the system has developed across different communities on campus over the years.
