Southeastern Louisiana University - SELU Overview

  About Greek Life at SELU

Southeastern Louisiana University sits in Hammond, right off I-12 in the Florida Parishes, and it's a mid-size regional university with a Greek system that fits its campus well. SLU pulls from a mix of commuter students and residents, and while it's not a flagship, Greek life has a real presence there — especially for students who are looking to get plugged in socially beyond the classroom.

The Greek community at SLU operates across both IFC and Panhellenic councils, covering the more traditional fraternity and sorority experience, alongside NPHC organizations that have historically been active on campus. On the fraternity side you've got chapters like Pi Kappa Alpha, Kappa Sigma, Delta Tau Delta, Theta Chi, and Sigma Tau Gamma, plus NPHC fraternities including Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, and Phi Beta Sigma. Sororities include Alpha Omicron Pi, Phi Mu, Alpha Sigma Tau, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and Theta Phi Alpha through Panhellenic, with Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta representing the NPHC side.

Recruitment runs in a fairly standard format for a school this size. IFC typically does a more informal process in the fall, while Panhellenic runs a structured recruitment week. It's not the high-pressure, ultra-competitive rush you'd see at an SEC flagship, so there's room to actually get to know chapters before committing.

One thing worth knowing about SLU specifically is that Greek organizations don't have a dedicated Greek Row with chapter houses the way bigger schools do. Social events tend to happen at rented venues or on campus, which changes the feel a bit compared to schools where the houses are the center of everything. That said, philanthropy events and chapter-hosted activities are a regular part of the calendar, and Greek organizations tend to be pretty active in campus events like Fanfare and Homecoming.

Hammond is a small city, so on-campus social life carries more weight than it might at a school near a major metro, and Greek organizations fill some of that space. The system is smaller and more close-knit compared to larger Louisiana schools like LSU, which means members tend to know each other across chapters fairly well.
