Exclusive parties, mixers

by: exclusive

Are most of the social events here private/exclusive? Also how long does mixer season last and can you go to them as a non sorority girl? How many mixers do sororities have per week? I’d love to hear more insight into the Greek scene here since I’m not in a sorority so it’s a bit confusing to me.

Greek events between organizations are private. If you're not in a sorority then there is no need for you to be confused, it doesn't pertain to you.

I want to rush next year. Why are Greek events private? I thought frat parties are open to girls. I heard you need to meet sorority girls before rush and I’d love to get to know more people and also be part of the social scene bc the school is dominantly Greek life.

Anyone who goes here can meet sorority and fraternity members in class, in dorms, in other student orgs. But it is HARD to get a bid as a soph.

If a frat has an open party that's not a mixer you can try to go. Otherwise, Greek events are private because they are private organizations that the members PAY FOR as part of their dues and social budget. You can't crash a private party. Plus there is huge liability for that scenario.

You are obsessed and are playing pretend. F off

I wouldn’t go to mixers bc I know those are exclusive but I’m talking about the other frat parties. How do you know when they are open? I thought girls can get in anywhere and the parties are just not open to non frat guys. Also I want to be in a sorority and meet people which is one reason why I want to go to frat parties. I was wondering about rush dates bc I know that that’s how sororities rush girls and that you need to know a lot of girls to get in and network, especially as a sophomore. I know that if they rush girls they also will take them out, so not just coffee dates. Please share any genuine and helpful advice you have.

Need to have separate quota for sophomores and up. They generally aren’t burned out and become young advisors and active alarms. Add maturity too.

They used to have a sophomore quota but got rid of it for some reason

I think that quota can be abused because it encourages more pnm's to drop if they don't get pkt or whatever the first time, so they have the option to try again the next year instead of being open minded to all the sororities. We need to support all the sorority chapters and get some more new ones, or we will all collapse together. Honestly, there are so many beautiful smart girls here in every chapter you can't tell them apart based on letters. The mindset is ridiculous.

What is really needed is variable quota combined with setting a slightly lower chapter total for a few years. That strategy has proven successful at other schools that had the same narrow minded problems that are at smu and has made much stronger sorority systems with more chapters succeeding at those schools. Panhellenic needs to be proactive.
