Southern Methodist University - SMU Overview

  About Greek Life at SMU

SMU sits in the heart of Dallas, and the Greek system here reflects a lot about the university itself — well-resourced, socially active, and deeply tied to campus culture. A significant portion of the undergraduate student body goes Greek, making it one of the more prominent social forces on campus, especially for freshmen trying to find their footing in a city like Dallas.

The system is organized under a few different councils. IFC oversees the men's fraternities, which include chapters like Sigma Chi, Phi Delta Theta, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Kappa Sigma, and several others. Panhellenic covers the women's sororities, with well-established chapters like Chi Omega, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Pi Beta Phi, Delta Gamma, and more. There's also a National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) presence on campus, with historically Black fraternities and sororities like Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, and Omega Psi Phi represented.

Recruitment for IFC chapters typically happens in the fall and follows a fairly standard rush format — events, house visits, and eventually bids. Panhellenic formal recruitment is structured and organized, running over several rounds across a set week. It can feel intense, but most chapters are genuinely trying to find good fits. NPHC chapters operate on an intake process rather than formal rush, which runs on its own timeline.

Housing is worth understanding before you get here. SMU's Greek chapters don't have standalone off-campus houses the way you might picture at a large state school. Many chapters have lodge-style spaces or designated areas in or around campus housing, but the sprawling fraternity row with massive houses isn't really the setup here. Social events tend to spread across campus spaces and off-campus venues in Dallas, which actually opens things up a bit.

Philanthropy is taken seriously across chapters — both IFC and Panhellenic organizations put real effort into fundraising events and community service throughout the year. Greek Week is a big deal on campus and pulls a lot of cross-organizational energy together. Given SMU's location in one of the largest cities in the country, Greek social events often have a distinctly Dallas feel to them, with connections to the city's broader social scene.
