Temple University - TU Overview

  About Greek Life at TU

Temple University is a large public research school sitting right in the heart of North Philadelphia, and the Greek system there reflects a lot of what makes the school itself tick — it's got range, it's active, and it fits into a campus culture that's distinctly urban.

The system is organized across multiple governing councils. IFC oversees the traditional men's fraternities, Panhellenic covers the women's sororities, and NPHC represents the historically Black fraternities and sororities — the Divine Nine organizations have a meaningful presence here. There's also a Multicultural Greek Council presence, with chapters like Iota Nu Delta, Lambda Theta Phi, Sigma Beta Rho, and Alpha Sigma Rho representing that side of things. The full list of active chapters spans fraternities and sororities across all four councils, which gives the system more breadth than you'd expect at a school where Greek life isn't necessarily the first thing people talk about.

Temple has roughly 40,000 students, so Greek-affiliated members make up a relatively small slice of the overall population. That said, it's not invisible. Chapters are involved in philanthropy events, campus programming, and community service throughout the year. The NPHC chapters in particular tend to be visible through step shows, Yard events, and probate showcases that draw solid crowds and are a genuine part of campus culture.

Housing is one thing to be aware of — Temple's Greek chapters generally don't have the big dedicated chapter houses you'd see at a large state school in the South or Midwest. The Greek presence is more dispersed across campus and the surrounding neighborhood. Recruitment for IFC and Panhellenic chapters typically follows a more informal structure compared to schools with formal Bid Day traditions, though that varies by organization. NPHC chapters run intake processes on their own timelines, which is standard across most campuses.

Being in Philadelphia gives Temple's Greek life a different backdrop than your typical college town. Off-campus social life competes heavily with what any single organization can offer, so chapters that are active tend to put real effort into building internal community. Philanthropy culture is present across the board, with chapters regularly running fundraisers and community-focused events tied to their national organizations' causes.

The discussion activity and reviews on this site reflect a community that engages with its Greek system — people have opinions, chapters have reputations, and recruitment generates enough buzz to keep things moving from semester to semester.
