St. Johns University - SJU Overview

  About Greek Life at SJU

St. John's University is a mid-size Catholic Vincentian school in Queens, New York, and its Greek system reflects the broader reality of being a commuter-heavy urban campus. A solid number of fraternities and sororities are active here, operating across multiple councils — IFC and Panhellenic cover the more traditional chapters, while NPHC and Multicultural Greek Council organizations are also represented, giving the system a genuinely wide range of communities.

The chapter list includes a mix you'd expect at a school with St. John's demographics. On the fraternity side you've got IFC standbys like Kappa Sigma, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Pi Kappa Phi, and Phi Delta Theta alongside multicultural fraternities like Iota Nu Delta, Lambda Phi Epsilon, and Sigma Beta Rho. Sororities include Panhellenic chapters like Delta Phi Epsilon, Gamma Phi Beta, and Phi Sigma Sigma, plus NPHC sororities including Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, and Sigma Gamma Rho.

Because St. John's is a commuter-dominant school in New York City, Greek life operates differently than it would at a traditional residential campus. There's no Greek Row, and most chapters don't have dedicated houses. Social events tend to happen off-campus or in university spaces, and recruitment is a real mix of formal rush processes and more casual interest events depending on the council and organization.

Greek life is part of the social fabric here, but it's not the defining feature of campus life the way it might be at a large state school. Students who go Greek tend to be pretty active in their chapters — it's a smaller, more close-knit scene where involvement tends to run deeper by default. Philanthropy and community service are a consistent thread across chapters, which fits with the university's broader mission around service.

The discussion and activity on this site reflects a community that's engaged, even if it's not enormous by national standards. The multicultural Greek organizations in particular have a strong presence and identity on campus, which sets St. John's apart from a lot of schools where IFC and Panhellenic dominate the conversation entirely.
