Dartmouth College - DC Overview

  About Greek Life at DC

Dartmouth is a small Ivy League school in Hanover, New Hampshire, and the Greek system here has historically been one of the more central parts of campus social life — especially given how remote the town is. There aren't a ton of off-campus bars or entertainment options, so fraternity houses have long filled that role for weekend social life.

The IFC oversees the men's fraternities on campus, which include chapters like Psi Upsilon, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Nu, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and Theta Delta Chi. On the women's side, Panhellenic coordinates sororities including Alpha Phi, Alpha Xi Delta, Delta Delta Delta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Kappa Delta, and Sigma Delta. There's also NPHC representation through Alpha Phi Alpha and Omega Psi Phi, connecting Dartmouth students to the broader Divine Nine tradition.

Rush at Dartmouth runs differently than at a lot of other schools. The quarter system shapes the academic calendar, and Greek recruitment tends to happen in the spring rather than the fall. That timing means most first-year students spend a semester getting settled before they go through the process, which a lot of people say gives them a better sense of where they actually want to land.

Most of the fraternities have houses on or near campus, and those spaces are where a lot of social programming — parties, events, chapter meetings — actually happens. The sororities have historically had a different housing setup, operating more as organizations without the same kind of dedicated residential space, though that's evolved over time.

Philanthropy and community events are a consistent part of how chapters present themselves at Dartmouth, and inter-Greek events draw solid involvement given the size of the school. Because Dartmouth's undergraduate population is relatively small for a major research university, the Greek system feels more tightly connected than it might at a larger state school — you're likely to know people across multiple chapters just from classes and dorms.
