Rutgers University New Brunswick - RU Overview

  About Greek Life at RU

Rutgers New Brunswick is one of the largest public universities on the East Coast, and its Greek system reflects that scale. Spread across a multi-campus layout along the Raritan River, the Greek community here is genuinely substantial, with dozens of active fraternities and a solid number of sororities representing a wide range of councils and identities.

The system operates across several governing councils. The Interfraternity Council (IFC) oversees most of the traditionally recognized fraternities, while the Panhellenic Council covers the NPC sororities. Rutgers also has a strong presence from the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), which includes historically Black fraternities and sororities, as well as a Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) that houses several South Asian interest fraternities and other culturally-focused organizations. That mix gives the whole system a breadth you don't always see at schools this size.

Recruitment varies by council. IFC chapters typically hold formal rush in the fall and sometimes spring, with events spread across the various Rutgers campuses. Panhellenic formal recruitment runs in the fall and follows a structured round system. MGC and NPHC chapters generally intake on their own schedules, often through interest meetings and a more relationship-based process.

Housing is a bit of a mixed situation at Rutgers. Some chapters have houses or chapter facilities, but it's not the same setup you'd see at a school with a dedicated Greek row. A lot of social activity happens off-campus or at rented spaces, and members often live in regular university housing or apartments nearby.

As a Big Ten school with a massive undergraduate population, Greek life is one piece of a much larger social scene. It's genuinely active and has deep roots on campus, but it's not the only game in town the way it might be at a smaller school. Philanthropy events, formals, and intramural sports are all common across chapters, and many organizations have been present at Rutgers for decades. The discussion activity and number of ratings on GreekRank reflect a community that's engaged and pays attention to its own reputation.
