Ohio Wesleyan University - OWU Overview

  About Greek Life at OWU

Ohio Wesleyan is a small liberal arts school in Delaware, Ohio — about 30 minutes north of Columbus — and the Greek system is a genuine part of campus social life there. With around 1,500 undergrads total, the school runs a surprisingly full roster of chapters across multiple councils, and for a lot of students it becomes a central part of how they spend their time outside the classroom.

The IFC oversees the fraternities, which include well-known nationals like Sigma Chi, Phi Delta Theta, Phi Gamma Delta, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Delta Tau Delta, and several others. Panhellenic covers the NPC sororities — chapters like Kappa Kappa Gamma, Delta Delta Delta, Delta Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta, and Delta Zeta all have a presence on campus. There's also an NPHC presence through historically Black fraternities and sororities including Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, and others, which adds a meaningful dimension to the overall Greek community at OWU.

Most of the IFC chapters have houses, and Greek Row plays a real role in weekend social life on campus. At a school this size, the fraternities are among the main spots where larger parties and social events actually happen, so even students who aren't members tend to interact with the Greek scene pretty regularly. Panhellenic chapters don't typically have residential houses in the same way.

Recruitment for IFC chapters usually happens in the fall, with Panhellenic formal recruitment following a structured process as well. Because the school is small, rush feels a lot more personal than it does at big state schools — you're not walking into massive chapter houses with hundreds of actives. It's a smaller pool, and people generally get to know each other pretty quickly through the process.

Philanthropy events are a consistent part of Greek life at OWU, and chapters tend to stay involved in campus organizations and leadership outside of their own chapter activities. That cross-involvement is pretty common at small liberal arts schools where the student body is tight-knit and people wear a lot of hats.
