University of Wyoming - UWYO Overview

  About Greek Life at UWYO

Nestled in Laramie at over 7,000 feet elevation, the University of Wyoming is a mid-size public university and the only four-year university in the state. The Greek system here is a real presence on campus, with IFC fraternities and Panhellenic sororities making up the core of organized Greek life. There's no NPHC or MGC council currently active, so the system runs pretty lean through those two main governing bodies.

The fraternity side has a solid number of chapters, including recognizable national names like Sigma Chi, Sigma Nu, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Lambda Chi Alpha, Pi Kappa Alpha, Alpha Tau Omega, Kappa Sigma, Pi Kappa Phi, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and FarmHouse. On the Panhellenic side, the four sororities — Chi Omega, Delta Delta Delta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and Pi Beta Phi — all have a consistent presence and tend to be competitive during formal recruitment.

Rush here follows pretty standard IFC and Panhellenic formats. Panhellenic recruitment is structured and typically runs in the fall with formal rounds, while fraternity recruitment tends to be a bit more informal and spread out. Class sizes aren't massive, so you actually get to know people during the process pretty quickly.

Wyoming's campus culture is shaped a lot by its setting — it's a college town where the university is the main event, and that tends to concentrate social life. Greek organizations are a meaningful part of the social scene, especially for students looking for a built-in community early on. That said, UW isn't the kind of school where Greek membership is a prerequisite for having a social life. Cowboys football and the general Western culture of the region are big unifying forces across the whole student body regardless of affiliation.

Most of the major fraternities have chapter houses, which puts them at the center of a lot of weekend activity. Philanthropy is taken seriously across chapters — both the Panhellenic sororities and IFC fraternities participate in national and local service events throughout the year. The relatively smaller size of the system compared to bigger flagship schools in other conferences means chapters tend to be close-knit, and members often end up involved in leadership roles both within their chapters and across campus organizations.
