Nope. I hope a RG didn't tell you that. SIP stands for Single Intentional Preference. It means that a pnm who has two pref houses only puts one down on her MRABA. It's also called 'suiciding'. If you did actually SIP and you don't bid match to that one house then you will not get a bid at all. If you only had one pref invitation to go to then that's not SIP and you are getting that bid, guaranteed.

As soon as you are able (I think right after bid day), reach out to Panhel and let them know you would like to participate in COB if any of the houses are doing fall COB.
Next, DM the VP of recruitment for the houses you are interested in to see if they will be doing COB (they may not know right away, but it doesn’t hurt to reach out). You can find them through the sorority’s instagram posts from earlier this year announcing their executives.
Finally, let any of your friends/dorm mates/classmates that are in sororities know that you want to COB and if they hear anything to let you know.
Keep in mind that if it doesn’t work out for the fall, there is always spring COB. Not every house does it, but many of them do, whether they announce it or not.

Yes, it is a little confusing, but even if a house makes quota, some of them will want to take more because they have a higher chapter total that they want to or need to make. This could be because they had a large senior class that just graduated, or something else that allows them to take more girls.

No, that's not correct. Chapter Total is reset by panhellenic right after bid day. Total exists to help maintain parity among all the campus sorority memberships. Chapters below the new Total are eligible to COB. They may do so or not. There will be very few open bids available and sororities don't necessarily announce that they are offering them. That's why interested pnm's need to reach out to VP's and any members they know.

Total is the same for each chapter. No chapter can just decide to offer bids, they have to be under Total to do so.

My understanding is that chapter total the amount of actives plus new members. If that’s the case then if a house meets quota, but they still need more girls to hit their overall chapter total then they could COB to get their numbers up to the chapter total number set by panhel, right?

Yes. A chapter's membership does include returning actives and new members. The various chapters' new membership numbers are used by panhellenic to determine what the new reset of campus Chapter Total will be. It is the same number for every sorority. Any chapter below the number that panhellenic sets is eligible to COB.

No. "Total" is a specific term for the maximum ceiling for any chapter's size as set by panhellenic. A chapter's actual membership is whatever it is, either at, above, or below Total. Chapters at or above Total are ineligible to COB. COB allows parity, meaning that all chapters have the chance to be at about the same membership, within a few members.

No. Since Total does not exist until after bid day, quota doesn't 'push a sorority above' it, it's a number that doesn't exist yet. Whatever Total was last year is no longer in effect at start of fall, Total is reset by panhellenic every year after rush and takes into consideration all the chapters' new membership numbers on bid day. More pnm's = higher quota = higher memberships = Total being higher. Total is THE NUMBER NOT TO EXCEED.
Chapter memberships may end up being at, below, or over whatever panhellenic sets Total at. It all depends on how many returning active members a chapter has at start of fall plus how many new members they take from recruitment.
Chapters don't want to COB if they don't have to. It's a pain. They already did recruitment, they have a new class, they are good and don't want the extra work. But anytime a chapter loses members, either from members dropping or Dec graduations, if they drop below Total they are eligible to COB.

can’t tell if this is a troll post but girl either of those would’ve been fine! the experience of being in a sorority is worth much more than ranking. also once you’re over the age of 18, you’ll think it’s crazy that you cared so much.
