House reputations from my perspective

PSA: There are only nine houses and hundreds of girls going through recruitment, so obviously these descriptions don’t apply to every single girl in a chapter. Every sorority at Boulder has amazing women, and this is just my perspective based on what I’ve seen and heard!

Top

Pi Phi:
Historically one of the top houses on the Hill. A lot of California girls, and the chapter has a reputation for being outgoing, social, and well-rounded. They definitely love to party but can be a little cliquey.

They typically rush #1 because they have their reputation to fall back on and the girls are super enthusiastic during recruitment. It can be pretty hard to get a bid.

Alpha Phi:
A top house at CU that definitely tends to attract a specific type of girl. Lots of California and Colorado girls, and they have a reputation for being very pretty and social. People sometimes say they only care about looks and status, but that obviously doesn’t describe everyone in the chapter. Girls tend to either love or hate Aphi, which is why they have a lot of girls drop.

They often compete for the same girls as Pi Phi and Kappa and put a ton of effort into recruitment. They’re known for getting on girls’ radars early, sometimes following or messaging girls as early as the spring. They may have been struggling a little more with recruitment and losing girls to other houses recently, but they’ll always end up with a good pledge class.

DG:
Frequently described as the “girl next door” house, and they seem to get stronger every year. The girls don’t always fit the stereotypical sorority-girl mold but are still social, mix with lots of frats, and like to have fun. I’ve heard about some clique issues, but I honestly don’t have much negative to say about them.

They recruit really well and often cross-rush with Pi Phi. They don’t have some of the scandals that Aphi has had, so some people argue they’ve passed Aphi and are up there with Pi Phi. Overall, a great, well-rounded, and relatively unproblematic house.

Middle

Kappa:
VERY over-hated in my opinion. People sometimes have one bad experience with a Kappa and use it to judge the entire chapter, but most of the girls I’ve met are super sweet. They have a somewhat similar vibe to Aphi—outgoing, social, and definitely love to party. They’re also really dedicated to their chapter, and it shows.

Their recruitment seems to get better every year, and they’re good at making PNMs feel special. They do sometimes lose girls to houses that PNMs perceive as “better,” but I would absolutely keep them on your radar.

Chi O:
A really well-rounded house with girls who are pretty, outdoorsy, and academic. They aren’t necessarily the most social chapter as a whole, but plenty of the girls go out. I’ve heard rumors about them being on social probation, but I have no idea if that’s actually true. They also have a great house location and seem to have a strong sisterhood.

Girls tend to be excited about Chi O, and they recruit well. I wouldn’t say they rush #1, but they definitely don’t seem to have a problem getting girls to return.

Alpha Chi:
Probably the house I know the least about. Every Alpha Chi I’ve met has been super sweet and gorgeous, but they don’t have as specific of a “type” as some other chapters. They like to have fun while also being dedicated to their chapter and school.
