University of Massachusetts Dartmouth - UMD Overview

  About Greek Life at UMD

UMass Dartmouth is a mid-size public university in the UMass system, sitting in the southeastern corner of Massachusetts not far from New Bedford and the South Coast. It's got a commuter-friendly feel to it, and the social scene on campus reflects that — it's a bit more spread out and less concentrated than you'd find at a flagship school. The Greek community there operates on a smaller scale, which means it's more of a tight-knit thing than a dominant force across campus life.

On the fraternity side, you've got IFC-affiliated chapters including Chi Phi, Sigma Tau Gamma, Theta Delta Chi, and Phi Kappa Theta. Sororities are represented through Panhellenic, with Alpha Sigma Tau and Phi Sigma Sigma both active on campus. There's no NPHC or MGC presence listed at the moment, so the structure is pretty straightforward — IFC and Panhellenic, that's the picture.

Rush and recruitment at a school like UMass Dartmouth tend to be more casual and lower-pressure than what you'd see at bigger state schools with massive Greek Row traditions. Chapters here are generally more accessible, and the process of getting to know an organization happens pretty organically. Don't expect the highly produced recruitment events you might see at large Southern universities — it's a more relaxed, personal process.

Housing is worth understanding going in. UMass Dartmouth doesn't have a dedicated Greek Row with chapter houses the way some larger schools do. Chapters operate more through campus spaces and organized events rather than private houses, which shapes how social life around Greek organizations works day to day.

Philanthropy and community service are a real part of what these chapters do — that's pretty consistent across both IFC and Panhellenic organizations here. Members tend to be involved in campus life beyond just their chapter, which is pretty typical for a school where Greek life is one piece of a broader social mix rather than the centerpiece of it.
