Metropolitan State College of Denver - MSCD Overview

  About Greek Life at MSCD

Metropolitan State University of Denver is a commuter-heavy urban school sitting right in the heart of Denver, and that context shapes pretty much everything about how Greek life works here. It's a smaller Greek community — a handful of fraternities and sororities — but it's active and covers a few different councils.

On the fraternal side, you've got Sigma Lambda Beta, which falls under the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) umbrella, and Alpha Phi Alpha, one of the most historically significant fraternities in the country and a cornerstone of the NPHC tradition. The sorority side includes Delta Sigma Theta (also NPHC), along with Phi Sigma Sigma, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and Alpha Sigma Alpha on the Panhellenic side. So there's actually a decent spread across councils for a school this size.

Housing is basically a non-factor here. MSU Denver is a commuter school through and through — most students live off campus, and the chapters don't operate Greek houses the way you'd see at a residential university. Events and chapter life tend to happen through campus programming spaces, off-campus venues, and community involvement rather than a Greek Row setting.

Rush and recruitment here work differently than at big state schools. It's less of a week-long spectacle and more of an ongoing, relationship-based process. If you're interested in a chapter, the best approach is usually showing up to open events and getting to know members over time. Chapters here tend to emphasize service, scholarship, and community engagement pretty heavily — philanthropy events and community service are a regular part of how these organizations present themselves on campus.

Going Greek at MSU Denver is more of a niche involvement than a dominant part of campus social culture. The school's student body is older on average, many students work full or part-time jobs, and the commuter nature of campus means there's no built-in residential community feeding into Greek recruitment. The chapters that do exist tend to attract students who are genuinely committed to the organization's mission rather than students looking for a traditional college social scene.
