letters of rec

by: rushing

On UF's panhel website, there's an FAQ with an answer that kind of confuses me, so if a current member could explain that would be greatly appreciated.. ps sorry for the length of this post.

FAQ: What are recommendations and do I need them?

Answer: ..."While it is recommended that you secure as many recs as possible, remember that it is ultimately not your obligation to solicit recs so don’t worry if you can’t find a letter for a sorority – the sororities will also be looking for recs on you. Sometimes it can be difficult for sororities to secure recs for all PNMs so it is extremely helpful to them for you to send in recs."...

I don't get the part where the sisters look for recs on PNM's. Also, do you not get a bid from a house if you don't have a rec??

Thanks in advance!

TBH I'm an active and I've never really heard of sororities "look" for recs for PNM's, there's way too many. And no you can still get a bid without a rec, but recs will help in the early rounds.

There are some sororities that have a national policy that you must have a rec in order to get a bid. What happens there though is the chapter has alumnae on call to write recommendations for those PNMs the chapter likes who get to the point where they know they will need one (like right before preference.) This is not something you should worry about. A lot of members don't even know about this policy or that it happens in their chapter. It's all behind the scenes stuff.

HOWEVER, it is important to secure as many recommendations from people who really know you that you can. They give sororities a really good picture of who you are beforehand and help us get to know you best and make you comfortable by pairing you with members who share similar interests etc. especially in the early rounds. They can really help.

Keep an open mind. Try to relax. Good luck!

When it says that we will secure recs for you, it's because we ask sisters who are friends with any PNMs on social media about the PNMs, if that makes sense.
And rec letters are helpful, but not necessary.

No, they're not necessary and unlike in the past, they do not guarantee you'll be invited back to second round.
