University of Florida - UF Overview

  About Greek Life at UF

UF is one of the largest public universities in the country, and the Greek system there reflects that scale. With dozens of active fraternities and sororities spread across multiple councils, it's one of the bigger Greek communities you'll find at any state school in the Southeast.

The main governing bodies are IFC for most fraternities and Panhellenic for sororities, but that's not the whole picture. UF also has a strong NPHC presence — the historically Black fraternities and sororities that make up the Divine Nine — as well as a Multicultural Greek Council that includes Latino-interest and other culturally-focused organizations. So the system is pretty spread out in terms of what's represented.

Recruitment at UF is what you'd expect from a big SEC school. Panhellenic formal recruitment draws huge numbers every fall and runs over several rounds across about a week. IFC rush tends to be more spread out and informal by comparison, though the bigger houses still see serious interest. Competition for spots in certain chapters can be real, especially on the Panhellenic side.

Greek life is genuinely woven into the social fabric at UF. Gainesville is a college town through and through, and a lot of the social scene — especially in the first couple years — runs through Greek organizations. That said, it's not the only way to have a social life there. It's prominent, not mandatory.

Philanthropy is a big part of the culture. Many chapters participate in Dance Marathon, which is one of the largest student-run philanthropy events in the country and has raised an enormous amount of money for UF Health Shands Children's Hospital over the years. It's something a lot of Greek members point to with real pride.

Housing varies by chapter. Some of the larger, more established fraternities and sororities have houses along or near Greek Row, but not every chapter has a house. The ones that do tend to use them as social hubs, and on football Saturdays that activity level goes up considerably — UF's game day culture and Greek life overlap a lot.
