This is late to be asking this question but I need to know for my friend. She’s a UF transfer as a sophomore and was at a school in the Northeast but wanted to be closer to family for personal reasons. She was in a sorority in the Northeast that has an extremely different vibe at UF. One that she’s worried she will hate. Can she rush and choose a different sorority or should she just give it up and not rush?

Real good view of her sisterhood she’s got there... already listening to rumors without even meeting any of them

No- she’s met them, she’s here for summer and it’s like completely different. She’s so not happy. It’s like a different sorority altogether- they won’t even make eye contact. She wore her letters to class the first week and one of the SISTERS laughed and said “yeah we aren’t like that here”

Lmao what. how can she tell what they’re like just by looking at her? even if they are really different, doesn’t mean she wouldn’t be able to find a friend group in her chapter here. they prob won’t make eye contact if they see some random girl wearing their letters that they don’t recognize lol

She has two choices and only two:
1) Make an honest attempt to get it to work with her chapter here. The worst that can happen is that she makes zero friends and it doesn't work out but at least she should try it for a semester. Also it is possible that the chapter might not allow her to affiliate.
2)Take alumna status and move on with making other friends that she can get along with. Anyone in a sorority should know that an initiated member absolutely cannot join another one.

At her school they just rushed in Spring (that’s when the only rush is) and she was only in her sorority for a few months. She truly didn’t know but she assumed. She was SK which is just really different there. She tried to speak to these girls in one of her classes and only one would speak to her. She told them about her sorority there and they told her “it’s not like that here“- it was just strange. She’s not a snob, but she isn’t going to be with girls who treat her like she’s a B without knowing her.

She needs to reach out OFFICIALLY to the chapter, not to random members. I don't know about SK but at most sororities there is a process where the chapter here would first need to verify that this person was a member in good standing and then be invited to meet the exec and other members at a few meals or some other events to see if she would be a good fit in the chapter here. Affiliation is not a gimme. NGL if some person I don't know wearing my letters came up to me and started talking to me like I should treat her as part of my chapter and asking me questions, I would 1) not be expecting it, 2) would be put off if she came off as presumptuous, 3) wonder why she didn't contact my chapter exec as soon as she knew she was coming here. Those girls likely felt exactly the same way.

Why did she not contact them as soon as she found out she was coming to UF?
