fall rush
by: PNMHonestly, I am super excited for rush! But I'm a little torn I love a lot of houses that my friends are already in like Tri Delt and DG but I feel like I won't really be able to contribute. I feel like the new houses like Gamma Phi Beta and Alpha Phi would be the best because it's so new and I can contribute to making it amazing and top tier eventually. Like i feel like their might be more opportunities in those houses. What do you guys think, am I totally wrong?

UF law student who joined a new sorority on a campus (not GPhiB here). Was checking out the UF chapter of my sorority on here. Anyway, I saw this & thought I would share a few thoughts on what it was like to join a new sorority, based on my experience.
Pros:
-you might be a part of top leadership from the start, something u may want
-just being Greek can lead to other great opportunities on campus
-new can b exciting
But:
-it took a long time until our house was ready, during that time, tbh, it didn't feel like a real sorority experience...we had various rituals at other locations instead. It felt weird & like a facsimile of Greek life. Some people may not mind, but it bothered me more than I thought it would.
-we had kind of a fake version of big/littles. We were so new, with no sense of tradition, so no history on that stuff, this part felt kind of bogus...esp if this is something u r looking fwd to.
-Our 1st regular rush(es) were frustratingly controlled by Nationals, they have a lot on the line when colonizing. We didn't have normal say on who we got to take...bcause of that, our "sisterhood" was not forged by its local sisters. In some ways it felt like a bunch of random strangers cobbled 2gether by Nationals. Bonds do form, but it does take time.
I personally wish I had a better understanding of some of these things before I joined, this is not what u typically get to hear. Looking back, it is def not for everyone, but mayb 4 some who dont mind being non traditional.

I agree that it is very hard to change tiers, but think that over a period of years it can slowly happen, so not impossible. I think some slight shifting has already been taking place. A few chapters have been showing some improvement over years worth of time (IMO: DDD, AOPi, Theta, Deeph, XO, & Phi Mu) and a few chapters have shown signs of vulnerability over the years (KD, DG, KKG). Throw in a few new chapters like GPhiB and Alpha Phi, to further shake things up, & it will be interesting to see what happens over the next several years.
