Jacksonville State University - JSU Overview

  About Greek Life at JSU

JSU sits in Anniston, Alabama — small-town South, football-first, the kind of school where campus traditions run deep and everyone kind of knows everyone. The Greek system fits right into that culture. It's not an enormous system by any stretch, but it's genuinely woven into campus social life in a way that you'd notice if it disappeared.

There are two main governing bodies you'll hear about: the Interfraternity Council (IFC), which covers most of the NPC-affiliated fraternities, and the Panhellenic Council, which covers the sororities. The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is also active on campus, representing the historically Black fraternities and sororities — Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma, and Iota Phi Theta on the fraternity side, and Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta among the sororities. NPHC orgs operate differently from IFC and Panhellenic — intake processes are separate and happen on their own timeline, not during formal fall rush.

On the IFC and Panhellenic side, recruitment typically follows the standard fall format. Panhellenic rush tends to be more structured and formal, with rounds, preference events, and bid day. IFC rush is a bit more casual — you'll meet guys, hang out, and go from there. It's a smaller school, so the process feels a lot more personal than it would at a flagship state university.

Chapters at JSU are involved in philanthropy events throughout the year, and Greek organizations participate in things like homecoming, step shows, and other campus-wide programming. The NPHC step shows in particular tend to draw solid crowds. Housing situations vary by chapter — some have houses or designated spaces, but this isn't a school with a sprawling Greek Row the way you'd see at Alabama or Auburn.

Because JSU's overall enrollment is on the smaller side, the Greek community ends up being a noticeable part of campus life without completely dominating it. A lot of members are also involved in other organizations, athletics, and student government, so there's significant overlap with the broader campus community.
