fraternity rush question

by: freshman

I'm a freshman whose going to rush in the spring, i've been around to a decent amount of blocks and I have loose connections with a few guys in multiple fraternities, but I still haven't really narrowed down where I want to look. I'm worried spring rush is going to come and I'll still be looking at 6ish places. Would rushing 6 places be spreading out too thin? How should I narrow down even more? I would like to focus on no more than 3-4 so I can come to most of their rush events. Any advice?

I feel like there's a perfect fraternity for everyone, and it just bothers me knowing that I may not even rush the place that's perfect for me, or that I'll rush the wrong places.

Definitely narrow it down to 3/4. Come in knowing what you want and just try to find that. If it’s a balance of social/acedmicis then that puts you with certain houses. If it’s Animal House/no rules that puts you with a different set etc.

I definitely want something with a good balance, not interested in complete top tier really but also don't want to join a place that doesn't know how to have fun

I want some place established with really fun/ nice guys, basically. Still I feel like that leaves me with way too many options

Rush Beta. You seem like that kind of kid that would fit in there.

For a good balance I would narrow that down to FIJI Delt Beta and maybe ATO

Can you tell me why the others aren't balanced?

I think “balanced” frat is kinda a bad way to think about it. You can join a meathead frat and do well, or you can join a really well known academic frat and fail out. No frat going to make you fail or put you into a position to fail out grade wise. Go where the parties are fun and you like the guys regardless of how high their house GPA is or their reputation.

You'd be surprised by the GPA's of frats like Kappa Sig and Sig Chi. Both usually sport higher GPA's than all of the frats you listed, except maybe Delt and FIJI

Sigma Chi and Kappa Sigma were ranked 18th and 25th respectively in IFC's SP17 grade report, so no, not much better than the other fraternities listed.

Gotcha. I hadn't looked recently, I just remember looking last year and I was surprised. For AU16 semester: Kappa sig was 7th and Sig Chi was 9th (out of 36)

When I say "balanced", I don't really mean a place where I'll be able to succeed academically, I'll be able to do that anywhere. I mean I don't want to join a place that just parties, or just focuses on school. I want nice guys, but I don't want guys that aren't fun. That kinda thing
