Ohio State University - OSU Overview

  About Greek Life at OSU

One of the biggest public universities in the country, Ohio State sits in Columbus with a student body that numbers well into the tens of thousands — and its Greek system scales accordingly. There's a lot going on here, spread across multiple governing councils, and the community is genuinely one of the larger ones you'll find at any Big Ten school.

The main governing bodies are the Interfraternity Council (IFC), the Panhellenic Council, the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), and the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC). IFC oversees the bulk of the traditional fraternities, while Panhellenic handles the NPC sororities. NPHC represents the historically Black fraternities and sororities — the Divine Nine — and MGC covers the multicultural and interest-based organizations. That structure means recruitment and membership look pretty different depending on which council you're interested in.

IFC formal recruitment typically happens in the fall, and Panhellenic runs a structured recruitment process during that same general window. NPHC chapters intake on their own timelines, usually through a separate process that's less event-driven and more relationship-based. It's worth understanding those differences going in, because they're not the same experience at all.

Columbus isn't a college town in the traditional sense — it's a real city, and a big one. That means Greek life competes with a lot of other social options, from bars and restaurants to independent organizations and professional clubs. That said, chapters here are active, and for a lot of members, the Greek community is a core part of their college experience. Housing varies by chapter; some of the larger IFC and Panhellenic groups have chapter houses on or near campus, while others operate without dedicated housing.

Philanthropy is a consistent part of the culture. Most chapters participate in campus-wide events and run their own fundraisers tied to national causes. OSU's size also means there's a lot of alumni engagement — the network here extends well beyond graduation, which is something members tend to value. The discussion activity and number of ratings on GreekRank reflect just how engaged and opinionated the OSU Greek community is online, which gives you a good sense of how plugged-in people are.
