Hobart and William Smith Colleges - HWSC Overview

  About Greek Life at HWSC

Hobart and William Smith Colleges sits on the shores of Seneca Lake in Geneva, New York — a small, residential liberal arts school where the social scene is pretty tight-knit by nature. The fraternity system here operates under IFC and is made up of a handful of chapters, which fits the overall scale of the school. There's no Panhellenic sorority presence at this time, so the organized Greek scene is entirely on the fraternity side.

The chapters here include some well-known national names — Sigma Chi, Delta Chi, Kappa Sigma, Theta Delta Chi, Phi Sigma Kappa, and Chi Phi are all represented, along with Kappa Alpha Society, which is one of the oldest Greek-letter fraternities in the country and has deep historical roots in the Northeast. That last one is worth knowing about if you're interested in the history of fraternities in America, because KA Society predates most of the organizations you'll see on campuses today.

Because HWS is a smaller school, the Greek system is more intimate than what you'd find at a big state university. Chapters tend to know each other, and the community is close. Rush typically happens in the fall and spring, and given the school's size, the process tends to feel more personal than the large-scale recruitment you'd see at SEC schools or big publics.

Fraternities at HWS generally have house or lodge spaces that serve as social hubs, and they're a real presence in the weekend social scene. That said, HWS also has a strong residential college structure and a lot of campus programming, so Greek life is one part of a broader social ecosystem rather than the only game in town. Philanthropy events and intramural sports are common ways chapters engage with the broader campus community.

Geneva itself is a small city, so campus life is pretty self-contained, and that tends to make organizations like fraternities more central to how students socialize and build community during their four years.
