Northern Arizona University - NAU Overview

  About Greek Life at NAU

Tucked in the ponderosa pines of Flagstaff at about 7,000 feet elevation, NAU is a mid-size public university with a Greek system that's a real part of campus social life without completely dominating it. The school sits in northern Arizona, draws a lot of students from the Phoenix metro area, and has a pretty laid-back mountain-town feel that shapes how Greek life operates here.

On the fraternity side, you've got IFC governing the bulk of the chapters, with well-known nationals like Sigma Chi, Pi Kappa Alpha, Phi Delta Theta, Delta Tau Delta, Theta Chi, and others all represented on campus. Panhellenic covers the sorority side, with chapters including Chi Omega, Delta Delta Delta, Alpha Delta Pi, Pi Beta Phi, Gamma Phi Beta, Alpha Phi, and more. There's also multicultural Greek council representation, with organizations like Lambda Phi Epsilon, Omega Delta Phi, Sigma Gamma Rho, and others rounding out the system and serving different communities on campus.

Recruitment runs in the fall and sometimes spring depending on the organization. IFC chapters typically do more informal recruitment compared to the structured, formal Panhellenic process that sororities run in the fall. If you're going through Panhellenic recruitment, expect a few rounds of events over the course of a week before preference night and bid day.

Housing is worth knowing about ahead of time. NAU's Greek community doesn't have a traditional Greek Row in the way some larger state schools do. Some chapters have chapter facilities or designated housing, but it's not a situation where all the houses are lined up next to each other. A lot of Greek social life happens through organized events, philanthropy weeks, and off-campus gatherings rather than being tied to a specific strip of houses.

Philanthropy is a consistent part of how chapters operate here. Most organizations run at least one major philanthropy event per year, and those events are often open to the broader campus. The overall culture leans toward a balance between social programming and community involvement, which fits pretty naturally with NAU's general campus vibe. Flagstaff itself is a college town with a strong outdoor recreation culture, and that tends to blend into the social fabric of Greek organizations as much as anything else does.
