College of Charleston - CofC Overview

  About Greek Life at CofC

College of Charleston is a mid-size public liberal arts school tucked into the heart of historic downtown Charleston, South Carolina, and the Greek system here is a real part of campus life without completely dominating it. It's the kind of school where Greek life matters, but you'll also find plenty of students who have nothing to do with it and still have a full social life.

The system is organized across a few different councils. IFC covers the traditionally white fraternities, Panhellenic covers the sororities in that same space, and NPHC represents the historically Black fraternities and sororities. You've got a solid mix of chapters across all three — fraternities like Sigma Chi, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Kappa Alpha Order, Alpha Tau Omega, Delta Tau Delta, and Zeta Beta Tau on the IFC side, and Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, and Phi Beta Sigma through NPHC. Panhellenic sororities include Chi Omega, Kappa Alpha Theta, Delta Delta Delta, Delta Gamma, Alpha Delta Pi, Kappa Delta, Phi Mu, Zeta Tau Alpha, and Sigma Kappa, while NPHC sororities include Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, and Sigma Gamma Rho.

One thing worth knowing about CofC is the housing situation. The school sits in a dense urban environment, so there's no traditional Greek Row with big chapter houses lined up next to each other. Most chapters don't have dedicated housing in the way you'd see at a large state school. They use on-campus spaces and off-campus venues for events and meetings instead.

Panhellenic recruitment happens formally in the fall and tends to draw a solid turnout. IFC rush is a bit more informal by comparison. NPHC chapters operate on their own intake process, which is separate from the formal fall rush calendar entirely.

Philanthropy is a pretty consistent thread across chapters here. Most organizations put real time into community service and fundraising events throughout the year, which fits with Charleston's overall culture as a city that takes its community institutions seriously. Socially, Greek events are visible on campus and in the broader downtown area, but the city itself gives everyone — Greek or not — a lot to work with on weekends.
