Colgate is a small, highly selective liberal arts university tucked in Hamilton, New York — a tiny upstate college town where campus life pretty much IS the social scene. That geographic reality shapes everything about how Greek life functions here. There aren't many off-campus bars or entertainment options, so Greek organizations carry a lot of weight in defining the social calendar.

The system is smaller than what you'd find at a big state school, with a handful of IFC fraternities and a Panhellenic council overseeing a few sorority chapters. The organizations currently active include Beta Theta Pi, Delta Upsilon, Phi Delta Theta, Phi Kappa Tau, Sigma Chi, and Theta Chi on the fraternity side, along with Delta Delta Delta, Gamma Phi Beta, and Kappa Kappa Gamma for sororities. It's an intimate system, and that means the chapters tend to be well-defined communities where members actually know each other.

Rush at Colgate follows a more traditional structure. Fraternity recruitment tends to be informal at first, getting more organized as the process continues. Panhellenic recruitment runs as a structured, formal process over a set period. Because Colgate's total undergraduate enrollment is on the smaller side, the community feels tighter than a big Greek system — the chapters are visible but not overwhelming.

Fraternities at Colgate have historically had chapter houses, which function as social hubs on campus. This gives the system a physical presence that matters in a town where alternatives are limited. Philanthropy and community engagement are consistent parts of chapter life here, in line with national organization standards and university expectations.

Colgate has pushed over the years to diversify its social programming and reduce reliance on the Greek system as the sole driver of campus nightlife, but the chapters remain a consistent and recognizable part of how students connect socially, especially during the long upstate winters.
