California State University, Chico - CSU Overview

  About Greek Life at CSU

Chico State has a reputation that precedes it — historically known as one of the bigger party schools in California — and the Greek system fits right into that broader social culture. The campus sits in the northern Sacramento Valley and draws a lot of students from the Bay Area and Southern California, which gives it a pretty social, outgoing student body overall. Greek life is a visible part of that.

The system runs through a few different councils. IFC covers the majority of the men's fraternities, and Panhellenic oversees the women's sororities. There's also a multicultural Greek presence on campus, with organizations like Gamma Zeta Alpha, Lambda Chi Alpha, Lambda Sigma Gamma, and Lambda Theta Nu representing that side of things. The full list of chapters is solid for a mid-size CSU campus — you've got well-known national names like Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Chi, Sigma Nu, Alpha Phi, Gamma Phi Beta, and Alpha Delta Pi, among others.

Recruitment happens in the fall and sometimes spring depending on the chapter. IFC rush tends to be more informal and rolling early in the semester, while Panhellenic formal recruitment is more structured with scheduled rounds and events. It's worth going through the process early in your first year if you're interested — chapters fill up and the social calendars get set pretty fast.

A good number of chapters have houses in the neighborhoods surrounding campus, particularly along the streets close to the main quad. It's not a massive Greek Row situation like you'd see at a flagship state school, but houses are definitely part of how chapters operate and host events.

Philanthropy and service are a consistent part of what chapters promote — most organizations run at least one major fundraiser or community event per year tied to their national philanthropy. There's also a strong presence at campus-wide events and involvement with student government and other campus organizations. The Greek community at Chico isn't just a social bubble; chapters tend to have members spread across athletics, clubs, and campus leadership too.
