California State University, Hayward - CSUEB Overview

  About Greek Life at CSUEB

Cal State East Bay sits in the hills above the East Bay, drawing a commuter-heavy student body from across the region — and that context matters a lot when you're thinking about what Greek life actually looks like here. It's a smaller Greek community compared to big residential campuses, but there are still active organizations across multiple councils doing real work on campus.

On the fraternity side, you've got a mix of IFC chapters like Delta Chi, Delta Sigma Phi, and Tau Kappa Epsilon alongside NPHC fraternities including Alpha Phi Alpha, Iota Phi Theta, and Kappa Alpha Psi. Lambda Theta Phi rounds things out and represents the Multicultural Greek Council presence. For sororities, the NPHC is well-represented with Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta. Sigma Sigma Sigma and Alpha Phi cover the Panhellenic side. So the council structure here is actually pretty broad relative to the system's overall size.

Because CSUEB skews commuter, Greek life functions differently than it would at a school with a traditional residential campus culture. Chapters don't generally have dedicated Greek Row housing, so most chapter activity happens through campus events, community service, and organized socials rather than house parties or live-in chapter life. Recruitment tends to be lower-key and more relationship-driven as a result.

The NPHC chapters in particular have a strong presence tied to their national organizations' legacies of community service and scholarship. Step shows and probate reveals are part of the cultural fabric those organizations bring to campus. Philanthropy events and community engagement tend to be where chapters across all councils are most visible throughout the year.

Greek life here is more of a niche part of campus culture than a dominant one, which reflects the broader character of the school itself — a diverse, working-class-friendly commuter campus in the East Bay where students have a lot going on outside of school. The organizations that are here tend to attract members who are genuinely committed to what their chapter stands for.
