I think grade reports are really the only "ranks" that matter. If you plan on shooting for A+s in every class, a house toward the bottom of the grade report may not provide an environment that will help you reach your academic goals as well as a top grade house would. I was torn between 2 houses, 1 that was in top 5 grades and one in bottom 5 (but a higher 'tier'). I chose the house with better grades and lower tier and now have over a 4.0. If I had wound up in the other house I don't think I would have as good of a GPA, or it would've been a lot harder to get it anyway.
