Georgia Southern University - GSU Overview

  About Greek Life at GSU

Statesboro is a college town through and through, and Georgia Southern's campus culture reflects that — football, Southern traditions, and a Greek system that's genuinely woven into the social fabric of the school. GSU is a mid-to-large public university in the Sun Belt Conference with a student body big enough to support a Greek community that spans multiple councils and dozens of chapters.

The system is organized across IFC, Panhellenic, and NPHC, with a Multicultural Greek Council presence as well. IFC covers your traditionally white fraternities like Sigma Chi, Pi Kappa Alpha, Kappa Sigma, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and others. Panhellenic includes well-known sororities like Chi Omega, Kappa Delta, Zeta Tau Alpha, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and more. NPHC brings in the Divine Nine organizations — Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, and others — which have a strong presence on campus. There are also Latinx Greek organizations through the MGC, including Sigma Lambda Gamma, Sigma Lambda Beta, and Sigma Iota Alpha.

Recruitment for IFC chapters typically happens in the fall, while Panhellenic formal recruitment also runs in the fall semester. NPHC chapters follow an intake process rather than a traditional rush, so the timeline there is different and often tied to individual chapter schedules throughout the year.

Houses exist for a number of the larger IFC and Panhellenic chapters, and Greek Row is a real thing here — it's not just chapters meeting in rented spaces. That said, not every organization has a dedicated chapter house, so it varies depending on which org you're looking at.

Philanthropy is a big part of chapter culture at GSU. Most chapters run annual fundraising events, and Greek Week tends to be a major campus moment when chapters come together for competitions and community service. The Greek community here has generated significant engagement over the years, as reflected in the volume of discussion and activity on review platforms — members here are clearly invested in talking about and shaping their organizations.

Overall, Greek life sits somewhere between a dominant social force and one of several major campus communities. It's not the only way to plug into the GSU social scene, but for a lot of students, it's a central part of their college experience.
