Drexel University - DU Overview

  About Greek Life at DU

Drexel is a mid-size private research university sitting right in the heart of West Philadelphia, and its Greek system reflects the urban, co-op-driven culture of the school pretty well. It's active enough to have a real presence on campus without dominating the social scene the way it might at a large state school.

The system is organized across multiple governing councils. IFC oversees the interfraternity side, with a solid lineup of well-known national fraternities represented. Panhellenic coordinates the sororities, which include several major national organizations. Drexel also has a strong NPHC presence through historically Black fraternities and sororities, as well as a Multicultural Greek Council that includes South Asian-interest and other culturally-focused organizations. That spread makes the overall community pretty broad in terms of what's represented.

Recruitment at Drexel works a little differently than it does at schools with a traditional September rush. Because Drexel runs on a quarter system and many students rotate in and out for co-op, recruitment timelines can shift. IFC typically holds rush in the fall and winter quarters. Panhellenic formal recruitment follows a structured process, though the co-op calendar does affect how chapters plan their schedules and when they're at full strength.

Housing is a real consideration here. Drexel doesn't have a traditional Greek Row with chapter houses lining the street. Some fraternities hold off-campus houses in the surrounding Powelton Village and University City neighborhoods, but it's not universal. A lot of chapter activity happens in campus spaces and rented venues rather than house-centered social life.

Philanthropy and community service are genuinely woven into how chapters operate at Drexel. Many organizations tie their signature events to national philanthropy programs, and the NPHC and MGC chapters in particular have a strong service-oriented identity rooted in their founding values. The discussion and rating activity on this site gives a sense that the community is engaged, even if Greek life here isn't the first thing every student thinks about when they picture Drexel.
