it's not our fault you didn't listen: cob

by: Listen closely

I don't know how many times we've stressed on this page that formal recruitment is your best shot to get into a house. In fact, we've told numerous girls that waiting until sophomore year to do formal rush as opposed to Spring COB is a better option.

We told you that no house is obligated to COB. We told you that most houses would fill the spots with friends of girls already in the house. We told you that most houses don't even hold public COB events. We told you that houses would lie about not COBing which, as you all know, many did.

I don't know on what planet you think you'd have a better shot getting one of five bids when a hundred girls are trying for them as opposed to rushing all fifteen houses and having your shot of making one of their bid lists, each house taking about 90-100 girls. That doesn't make any sense to me.

You can down vote and be bitter and sad that you didn't get one of the five bids that a hundred girls were trying for. Or you can learn from this and keep your grades up so you can rush again in the fall.

And I need to stress that KD holding public COB events was very rare! It was really cool and I applaud KD for being unashamed to admit they're COBing and for allowing all the PNM's access to their information so they all had a fair and equal shot.

But like we said, it's usually not like that. It's very rare. You cannot rely on the houses to do that. And you don't understand because you're not active yet but a lot of us don't have a say in if/how we COB, our Nationals and our advisors make the call.

So before you go throwing stones and writing off a house because they didn't email you back, remember that it likely wasn't their choice at all.

Yes, KD should be commended. But EVERY house should do it the way they did. Being transparent and fair is the right thing to do. And if I were interested in joining a sorority, the LAST think I would do is go through informal because those houses simply aren't interested in getting the best girls available, they just want any old friend of a friend to help pay the bills. I would never join a house that is that lazy.

I don't disagree with you about having COB be a more open and truthful process. I think KD did COB the right way and it would be nice if every house COB'd like KD does.

As for laziness, I don't think that's the reason other houses do COB in secret. We've created a very toxic system that looks at COB as if it is a failing on the sorority that participates. We've created a culture in our Greek System that mocks the COB process and looks down on girls who COB or houses that participate in COB. I don't blame houses for wanting to hide the fact that they're COBing.

What we need is to stop acting like COB is an inherently bad thing and encourage other houses that participate in COB to follow the model KD set this semester and hopefully we can fix the way things are.

It IS a failing. But maybe if those houses that COB chose the best girls available, not just friends of current members, they would become better houses, put on a more competitive formal rush and wouldn't have to COB. The only way to do that is to not settle. It's a vicious circle, but it can only end if they raise their standards.

I'M a disgrace?????? It's the lack of effort that house put forth during the COB process that's a disgrace. There are so many quality girls out there -- minorities, out-of-staters, transferees -- who don't even get a chance because they don't know the right people. What kind of way is that to choose members for a sorority? If you seek the best and brightest and want to improve your house so that you don't have to COB, do the work. Invite everyone, or at least answer their emails and phone calls to see what they have to offer. The only shame is how LITTLE effort some sororities put into COBing, which could be their best chance to get out of the basement. If you don't understand that, YOU are the disgrace.

Year after year the same houses COB. Year after year they do it the same way, by issuing bids to women just because they have friends in the house. And year after year they remain bottom dwellers. You would think the lightbulb would go on. During formal rush you are competing with the best houses. During informal you are not, and if you put forth a little effort you have the chance to get the type of quality girls who otherwise would go to the top houses. If you choose not to, well, that speaks for itself.

I think it's important to realize two things.

1. A house cannot move up unless another house falls, but that doesn't mean these houses that you consider "bottom dwellers" aren't improving based on where they started out. Our bottom tier is stronger than they were five years ago.

2. I think she was talking about making COB shameful for the PNM's. Some girls who COB feel as though they're not real sister and that's something we need to combat.

I really agree with whomever said that COB needs to stop being made "shameful." I pledged a chapter as a COB but dropped before initiation. I understand that the members who pledged during formal were "ahead" of us in becoming sisters, but I never truly felt like I was a part of the sisterhood because of that and because we were just so separate from the rest of our pledge class.

This actually makes me angry that you would take a spot at a house on bid day that so many girls cried over and would have done anything to be in your position and then you casually have the courage get on this website and say that it was the COB process that was unfair to you.... It is not that house's fault that you decided to go through recruitment when you did.
