There has to be a better way

Regardless of whether someone receives a bid or not, the entire sorority rush process is just horrible.

Let’s take a bunch of 18 year old girls, majority that have never been away from home, and charge them $$ to come to school a week early (and many days before rest of student body) so they can be judged by those who don’t know them.

Then day one some are told that houses don’t even want to talk to them…..AND NOT EVEN BE TOLD WHY. Grades? Maybe. We hated your 1 minute video? Possibly. But we don't have the courtesy of even telling you. Good luck the rest of the week!

Then as the days go by more cuts may happen. Again, no house even has the courtesy of telling a girl who’s been cut what the reason is. You have brown hair and we want more blondes? We didn’t like the way your outfit looked? Fine. At least those are reasons. These girls receive nothing.

Such a shame that every girl going through rush has to subject themselves to such an undignified process….knowing that many cool girls will receive nothing after going through it without being given any reason. Before first day of college starts many girls wi be told “you’re not good enough” after reading nothing else but how much fun they will have being greek via the PHA site. Does the site say anything about those who don’t get picked? Nope. Who cares? You’re not one of us.

Just terrible. For those who don’t receive a bid this weekend, you have nothing to be ashamed about. You did your best and even though sororities don’t have the courtesy of giving you a reason why you weren’t asked back you are worthy of dignity and respect!

Well mom, what about the boys who don't want to date her, will you demand that they explain themselves? Or the girls in her dorm who don't choose to include her in their close friend group, do you need a report from them about it? Just wait until your darling girl has to go out and find employment, are you going to demand that HR owes you a reason when she didn't even get an interview, or didn't get a job offer? Sorry you think that others' opinions are just black and white rejection and disrespect and shaming of others, it says a lot about you.

Mizzou uses a statistical model called Release Figure Methodology. The houses are told how many PNMs they have to release each round. That number is based on historical return rates. If one house has 80% of PNMs listing them as wanting to return to the next round, and another house has 20%, the first house is forced to release more numbers. Before this method was used (and I think RFM has been around for more than 20 years) the more popular houses would invite back too many girls that never had a chance and the less popular houses were never given a chance by the girls. Although it is far from perfect, it does level the playing field and optimizes the odds of each PNM getting a bid and each house reaching quota.
Although it doesn’t feel like it; it’s math and not personal.
Also, once there are in-person parties that has many uncontrolled variables. The scoring system is still subjective. One recruiter may not be as likely to give high scores as another one. Was the party the first one of the day? Sometimes scores climb as the day goes on, but if you are there first there is nobody to compare you to.
It most likely doesn’t come down to hair color or outfit. (And if it did, is that kind of superficial house where your daughter would find true friendships?)
You are correct in that rejection stings, especially the first week away from home, and I feel for you and your daughter.
There are probably houses out there who really like your daughter and she might still get a snap hid, or can COB in the spring after she spends this first semester befriending girls in all the houses.
