do stephen's girls have a chance at rushing

by: K

I'm thinking about transferring to Stephens College after this year for my sophomore year, and as far as I know Stephen's girls are allowed to pledge a Mizzou sorority. Would I stand any chance at making it? I currently attend a large school out east, however the sorority presence is really small. I hear that it's a lot bigger in Missouri, and would really like to pledge a sorority if that's possIble (largely so I can meet guys and get away from the overly artsy girls at Stephens. Going to an all women's art school should be great for my program and major, but I suspect I'm going to need some other outlets, socially.) I also love the idea of sisterhood. Anyways, do Stephen's girls tend to get overlooked come time for rush? and Would my transfer status be another strike, or is there a chance I could get into a decent sorority?

No you can't join Mizzou's Greek Life if you go to a different school, but Stephens does have sororities of their own

Stephen's girls aren't allowed to be a part of Mizzou's Greek Life. Stephen's has 2 sororities: KD and Tri Sigma. I have a few friends that go there and they told me that Tri Sig is considered to be the better house out of the 2. You might want to try rushing there, but if you want to be a part of Mizzou Greek Life you will have to transfer to Mizzou.

Dear Uh no,

Why would you even say something that mean? What have they done to you?

Just wondering.....

If you're going Greek at Stephens, go Sigma. They're the better house in looks, grades and competitions. Not like it matters as much as it does here but all the Stephens KD's I've met are just jealous and catty.

Unless you plan to live the rest of your life in a utopian bubble that has no relationship to the real world, I would just suggest that you trtansfer to Mizzou. The Greek system is better and the education at least applies to the real world.

I mean I'm a fashion merchandising major, so Stephens is good for that, from what I gather, their program is more highly acclaimed than Mizzou's. I think I'll do better academically there, with the smaller classes and more personalized approach to learning, that's one of the big reasons I'm transferring. The plan is to ace my classes at Stephen's and then go get my associates at FIT in New York, build connections there, and graduate with a job in the city. Is there a stigma with Stephen's girls, amongst the Mizzou students, socially or academically? Do they have the general cliche of fashion majors who go on to get married and lead the domestic life, doing nothing with their degrees. Sorry, not sure if this is the right venue to ask, but I really want an honest straight forward answer, without an BS

There is no stigma about Stephens girls. Honestly we don't even think about you guys. Not to be harsh, just Mizzou is a huge school and Stephens is, well, not.

It doesn't matter where you get your degree, it matters what you do with it. That may be the stereotype of Stephens girls, but you don't have to live up to it. If you've done your research and you feel that Stephens has a strong program in the Fashion field and you want to go there, don't let anything stop you. And I think you might have meant you want to get a masters from FIT, not an associates. Also, I would STRONGLY suggest a business minor so that you have something to fall back on if fashion doesn't work out for you. It's a crazy competitive industry and one of the hardest to make it in. It's not about your degree, necessarily, but who you know that can help you get your foot in the door. Just some food for thought. Whatever you decide, I wish you good luck!

Except it DOES matter where you get your degree. Just ask any of the out-of-state journalism majors who are paying big money to attend the best journalism school in the nation. It will make a difference for the rest of their lives and tells potential employers you have very high standards.

Seriously why would anyone think they could go to one school and join a sorority at a different school? It just doesn't even make sense.

FIT offers associates and bachelors degrees. Most likely what she means is take a year or two Stephens, then transfer to FIT (highly competitive to get in!!) to get an associates or bachelors degree. The connection is what you go to FIT for if you want to work in the city. I am planning to do almost the same thing. Don't ridicule her although since original post was a gazillion years ago, she is long gone and hopefully in the city by now!
