grades, again?

by: Wow

Here we go again. Most thought this was settled last year, but here we go again. Grades are so irrelevant, especially when they are so close(we are talking between a 3.1 and 3.4, at tops).Houses submit grades,as they want. The fact that the grades were posted so early for spring semester should be an indicator that they are not even complete when they are submitted and calculated.I don't blame anyone on grade reports, people want to be done for the summer and most within the system know that there is such a minor difference it's not worth exceeding the deadline to submit. Not to mention, houses report grades in various manners. Again, the majority of houses are so close-unless your house, collectively, has over a 3.5, all houses are to close to call. There are so many grade changes that are done AFTER greek grades are posted. As a matter of fact, if sororities want to start bragging about how 'unbelievable their 3.whatever is, they should probably go check out the frat gpa's-because they aren't too far behind! If you are choosing a house based on gpa, good for you. If you are confident and independent and feel that your grades will get you to that next chapter you are heading to, more power to YOU! there are many mid and lower tier houses that have girls with amazing gpas that receive amazing offers for internships, etc. Go in to recruitment and be yourself-follow your heart and stick to your own academic standards! No perks on campus for being in one of the 'smartest' houses!

No kidding ^^^ Didn't even bother reading all that. Just another sad attempt by delusional alpha phi trying to convince us all that grades don't matter . Jeez maybe you should focus less on spamming up Greek rank and more on the books!!'

NOT an alpha phi. This post can apply to most houses. Get over it-grades are not that relevant.

Grades don't matter that much but if it's to the point where lots of girls have to leave because of grades, that's a turn off for a sorority. I don't wanna make friends just to have them to be forced out

Doubt you're a pnm but this could happen in any sorority and 100% would happen if you had any GDI friends

Keep in mind: self-paced classes aren't necessarily completed. Last year I had one in the fall that didn't finish until the summer, so not all grades can be accurately reported.

As scholarship chair I can tell you that there was a deadline for submitting grades and that there was nothing "early" about this year's posting. And accuracy is a requirement. As for people who don't finish self-paced classes on time, that's not really true in our house. Most girls want to finish them in time to apply for internships and since the average grade for these classes is higher, they love to have the additional A on their record. We were all scrutinizing TriDelt's grades looking for those missing 60 people, and the chapter count didn't fluctuate significantly, so I have no idea where that came from. Finally, did anyone notice that while Alpha Phi could have used COBing as a way to raise their GPA by being careful and taking girls who were smarter than their usual norm, they didn't do that? The 13 girls they COB'd had a collective GPA of 2.9. I've never heard of anything that low.

Well that's not a great impression we are sending to pnm's when a supposed scholarship chair gets on an anonymous, catty website and defends a top tier house and bashes a bottom tier house for not cob'ing correctly. Perhaps you should go and make note of which sororities actually improved their gpa from fall semester to spring semester(we are looking for improvement, aren't we)and then explain why certain houses report such discrepancies from one semester to the next with their totals, new members, etc. Perhaps, as a scholarship chair, who is a representative of greek life at mizzou, you should be more supportive of our system and not so critical of houses trying to make a change. And btw, not an alpha phi, just another of the many houses you indirectly bashed with your post.

Isn't it entertaining when someone posting on this website is critical of someone posting on this website? Why don't you hold YOURSELF to a higher standard?

The only criticism was that we have a supposed 'top' house scholarship chair on greek rank CRITICISZING other houses. Your house, as well as panhell, must be so proud of your representation! Other than that I agree with most, people put WAY too much in to grades that are so close.

I agree-the grade issue is pretty insignificant. Being a mid tier house that takes all legacy(and that is pretty universal with this chapter). Although there are many, many girls in the house that have a 3.7-4.0, a couple less than stellar girls can really bring that down. Not saying it's the legacies, but in some cases they might be someone we wouldn't normally choose. And someone else made the good point when you think of it in those terms. A mid ranked house may have a higher percentage of exceptional girls, say a 3.8-4.0 with a several bringing the average down. While a 'top' house may have a bunch of above average, 3.4-3.6 girls, putting them right there-average to above average. Until a house prints each individual gpa theres really no way of knowing if there truly is a 'stand out' house. Again, yes, 3.4 might be above the all school average, but it's still not an incredible house-IT'S AN AVERAGE OF A HOUSE. All it takes is a bad semester by a few girls to bring a house down.
