old row has more alabama kids with legacy or other down home connections. this is important to some but not many kids.
they also have more local and active alums that hover all over their stuff.

and new row are the frats and sororitys that are not old row. they usually have far fewer alabama home grown kids (but do have them) and have more out of state and diverse membership. but there are out of state kids in old row houses. just not nearly as many.

"old row" is just a reference to a budweiser sponsored party that a lot of the houses participate in. it does not refer to those chapters being actually on campus longer or being "older" than the others. although in general the houses that do participate in the "old row" sponsorship stuff happen to be many of the houses that have been around a good while and have a lot of local membership.
other old houses, like zeta and adpi, are not involved with it because of their national's policy.

for sororities, the only real distinction on age is "first circle" which are the first three houses on campus that have been on campus uninterrupted to today. adpi was actually the first, but something happened with them at some point a long time ago that keeps them from being considered first circle. not sure what. it may be that they were not here as adpi in the very beginning, but instead derived from a local sorority and then changed the name to adpi later.

Old Row is not a reference to a Budweiser party or any other sponsorship -- that's just a myth circulated by people who aren't in an old row frat or sorority.

First Circle is DDD, AGD, and KD. They are not the oldest, but some of the oldest. It refers to where the houses sat on sorority row facing each other in sort of a circle.

First circle refers to where KD AGD and DDDs houses were situated before all the construction. They were not the first 3 sororities on campus.

Here is a list of the houses who have been here consecutively.

KD
ZTA
DDD
AGD
CHI O
DZ
AXO
KAPPA
PHI MU
ADPI
PI PHI
AOPI
THETA
GPHI
DG
ALPHA PHI

The Old Row fraternities generally have more Alabama kids, the New Row fraternities have a larger mix of both Alabama and out of state. Old Row generally has more money in the state of Alabama; most have a few houses off campus that stay within the fraternity for parties. The houses behind University on Jefferson are NOT New Row, though some people consider Delta Chi and Lambda Chi apart of the New Row group.

Houses still on Jefferson considered New Row are ZBT, LXA, DX, DTD and KE.

Also considered New Row are OX, EX, Pi Kapp, Pike, ATO and Beta.

Old Row is for local kids, who consider themselves wealthy and sophisticated.

New Row is for kids from all over America, who actually are.
