cob for spring 2016

by: Bamafriend

I am a current freshman at UA. Being out-of-state with not the most stellar HS GPA, I did not participate in Fall Recruitment to focus on my grades and time-management. I did well my first semester and have made some really nice friends, both in and out of sororities. I love UA and cannot think of a better school for me (Roll Tide!). I would like to continue with my future years at Alabama with sorority, if a house will have me. Have any of you heard if any houses might be participating in COB this upcoming semester? Do I have any chance in heck for next fall? I am open to the houses, as I know all are large, well-respected organizations with a lot of different personalities and interests within their walls. Thank you in advance for any help!!

I think you have a chance with the nice sorority friends you have made. Do they know you are interested? When you talk about it with them gauge their level of excitement and body language. If it's not high...well you have a problem.

Are you super polished, high energy? In any other student orgs?

You may get a spot in the extra sophomore spaces in the fall. It's worth trying. If a chapter you know has an opening in the spring give it a go.

Thank you for your response! Yes, my friends like me and say I would be a good fit at their respective houses. However, I know there are a lot of great girls who get good grades, are polite, and dress appropriately who will be looking for spots, too. I have met many girls in my classes and at various fraternity date parties who assume that I am in a sorority, so I guess that means I look and act like a girl a house would take. I have attended all but one home football game ( thank you, lottery!), and am involved in two student organizations. I like to do at least one fun thing per day.

I like meeting people and to be a part of something bigger. I'm not going into this for the party scene ( I do like to dance and go to parties, but I don't care to drink and I like my early classes!). My high school was big with charity work and I miss that bond. I just wanted to know if there is a chance for me, knowing they are slim, as a second semester freshman.

Honestly, everything you've said (your original post and response) makes me think you have a great shot! As for the GPA, you did the right thing to concentrate on academics and achieve a strong 1st semester GPA rather than a not so great HS one. It seems like your personality and reasons for joining would be appealing to most houses. I'm in what's considered a competitive house and I find your attitude really refreshing! I think the biggest factor on when to rush is what houses are doing COB and if you have friends in them. They will be your biggest advantage. If those houses aren't doing COB I'd roll the dice and wait for fall. You'll have more options. Good luck & Roll Tide!

Thank you for your response and your kind words! I have received invites to see a few houses through COB. Though I'm not familiar with girls in these houses, I'm always up for meeting new people. I'm excited to see where this may lead! If it doesn't work out, I'll still try for Fall Recruitment. Again, thank you for your well wishes and Roll Tide!

If size doesn't bother you there's always SDT! My lovely roommate is one and their "rush" week is next week. They are super sweet and seem very tight knit so you may wanna give them a chance. If I didn't go through formal I definitely would've looked into them!

I just want to encourage you to do COB as much as possible. I went through rush here as a transferred in sophomore. I have a 3.8 GPA was valedictorian, peer leader, varsity cheer, varsity dance, and get asked what sorority I'm in all the time. I was released from recruitment after philanthropy day. Unfortunately there just isn't a lot of spots for upper classmen and there's a lot of really qualified, quality girls trying for those spots.

Anything to share on how or when you hear from houses after the events are over whether a bid is extended or not?

I'm so glad you received invites for some chapters COB.

Just because you don't have friends in some of those -- not to worry -- you will make friends easily. And you will keep the ones in other sororities you have already made.

Let us know what happens. You don't need to name names. Rooting for you to find your place this Spring or next fall
