transferring to phi mu

by: transfer

Help, bama! I'm a phi Mu at a school up north where sorority life is not that serious. I'd say we're right in the middle tier and we don't have houses or anything.
I'm transferring soon and was wondering if it was worth joining phi mu here? or is it super catty and cliquey. I'm personally a very liberal girl and wouldn't be able to stand ignorance and intolerance in my sorority

If you are "very liberal" why would you choose Bama?

just for clarity: I really am trying to make the right choice on whether bama Panhellenic life is for me in general, the house I'm currently (a school with 7 houses) in just happens to have a house here. I'm sure it's wildly different, we don't have houses, I was never hazed, we don't have football games, philanthropy is the primary focus over social events, etc.

Basically what I'm asking, is if the differences are very drastic and if there's truth behind the stereotypes for sororities at this school or if I'm going to find my new home.

they are known to be very cliquey and they do not have that great of a sisterhood. and if you're not "pretty", they don't accept you.

can they not accept me even though I'm already an imitated member?

They can vote not to accept you. Seems wrong but it has happened.

Did you go to Penn State? If so, there is a big culture difference.

If this is a real question, then I'd suggest looking at their tumblr page to see if you think you'll mesh with them. I'd say transferring in to ANY house at Bama is tough, because rush is so brutal. If a house didn't get to choose you, then it's harder for them to accept you, unless you fit their mold. It would be like cheating to get in.

ah that's what I was worried about... what's their tumblr page?

She means for you to google "Alabama Phi Mu tumblr" "Alabama Phi Mu Instagram" "Alabama Phi Mu Twitter" "Alabama Phi Mu Facebook" etc. Look through the pictures, look at the posts, and you can get a "feel" for Phi Mu here and see if you think you could feel at home there. Also, you won't be hazed here either (doesn't happen in sororities), football games are so much fun at Bama, you'll still have plenty of opportunities to get involved with Phi Mu's philantrophy (plus get to go to awesome social events ;) ), and living in the house-or just having a house to go to to eat meals or hang out with your sisters- makes a world of difference in terms of sisterhood. Also, having 16 groups vs 7 just means that you'll make even more friends in different groups, there are more Greek wide events, etc. Yes, the culture will be different here, but it's not a bad thing if it fits you. Good luck!

Thank you so much!! I'm still nervous about the cultural change but hopefully it'll be for the better. never had a sorority house before (not really a thing in my school or Illinois or Indiana schools in general) but having meals sounds like a huge perk lol
