big city southern

by: 2020

So I've been hearing a lot about "connections" and how important being wealthy is to getting into Old Row and how it help being from the South. I'm from the South but from a large metropolitan city (metro population over 1 million), so I'm a deal more liberal and cosmopolitan than maybe the average Southerner. Will that be a problem in traditionally Southern sororities?

Also, my parents are both professionals and we have our own small business that makes a decent amount of money, but we've never acted "rich" because there are legitimate billionaires and people with tens of millions of dollars in my hometown. Also because there are so many people in my hometown, it's impossible for people of the same "social class" to know everybody else in the same city. I only have 2-3 personal connections in Alabama sororities (total) but wealth-wise I think I'm on par with girls from Vestavia/Mountain Brook/Mobile, etc.

Would I still have a chance at all houses or am I immediately excluded from Old Row simply because of connections?

Self awareness is one of the most critical qualities we on the old row appreciate. In fact, I too am cosmo as all get out. Raised in a big city too, like you (Jackson!), I just recognize other people's inferiorities right out of the gate. I can tell that you can too. You're gonna be fine. There are plenty of old row folks from cosmo areas like Mobile and, the big city B'ham.

You seem like a real 'go getter'...have a blessed day OP!

Um... I can't tell if you're being facetious or not. I definitely don't "recognize other people's inferiorities right out of the gate." Also I'm from a city much much larger than Jackson or Birmingham (think more Dallas or Atlanta sized). I've just heard that a lot of people don't consider city girls to be "Southern" enough or have the same "values." True, untrue?

I would say for the most part, untrue that we think southern "city" girls aren't "southern enough" or don't "have the same values" . If you are from the Dallas or Atlanta area (for example), and your parents are wealthy professionals, it's probable that you actually live in a nice suburb of Dallas or Atlanta, not the cities themselves. Therefore, you were likely raised relatively similarly to the girls from the nice suburbs of Birmingham (like Mountain Brook and Vestavia). Plus, there are more OOS than in state PNMs at Bama now, so really, the only-but important- "leg up" the in state PNMS have over OOS PNMS actually IS close connections to actives already in sororities and close connections to Bama alumnae who can write them stellar recs tailored specifically for their actual chapter.

It's not the rexs. It's having in house actives pulling for you and working for you. In state girls have more of that so they usually have more options.
