How much does being a legacy help at UA? Which houses value it the most?

For a fraternity or sorority?

Fraternities are much more likely to give legacies a longer look (and more consideration for getting a bid) than sororities are. Why? Because pretty much every sorority on campus can fill a PC X 2 or 3 with just legacies, and no one wants to do that, so some great legacies have to be inevitably cut...every year, and this includes Bama legacies. It's sad, but that's just the way it works. Fraternities, on the other hand, do consider legacies more because all of them (including Old Row, whether they choose to acknowledge it or not is up to them) need more alumni support. More legacies=more alumni support=more money given to the chapter. It works out well for the fraternity in the end. The sororities should probably consider this, as I know many girls who were dropped from their (Bama) legacy group, and their sister/mother/grandmother etc withdrew all financial support, stopped volunteering, and they pretty much acted like they were never a Mu Nu Gamma at all. Just saying, ladies. How would you feel if your future daughter was dropped from YOUR chapter (at Bama)? Would you keep paying alum dues, donating to the group, receiving the magazine, joining an alum/Panhel group, volunteering your time and $ for your national organization? Hell no. Fraternity men are 10000 miles ahead of sororiry women in terms of this issue. Sorry I'm not sorry because it's the truth.

Good stuff, but those old houses can't go all legacy cause if they did they would suck and miss out on new fresh awesome girls. It ain't all about money. At some point how much you need? This is why old row houses like dke are not very good any more.

Ladies, I'm so sorry that this happened to both of yall. I know it was painful and upsetting. Like someone above us said, pretty much every house on campus could fill a PC x 2 or 3 with just legacies, so we can't keep everyone. We try to release the girls we KNOW we don't want/aren't good fits after Philanthropy, but sometimes girls will say "they hated me so much that they dropped me the first chance they had", so that's hard to hear because it usually isn't the case-we just want them to have as many opportunities as possible to join the house they're meant to be in. If you were kept through skit, the girls in your legacy house did genuinely like you...they just liked other girls a little better/thought they would be better fits. Being dropped after skit, though, often makes girls feel like they were being led on (which sucks too). What do you think (I'm assuming yall are NMs of a different house now) we should do about this situation?

There isn't anything to do, which sucks! Because I'm glad I made it through skit, but I thought they liked me enough to keep me through pref, because had they kept me, they would have been my first choice. It sucks. Sucked. But unfortunately, this is the only thing to do, in order to give the legacies that might fit a chance.

Drop us quickly do not give false hope. I was dropped after I was told I would be back. The rush chair called my mom and said everything was great. the next morning I was dropped. I would have kept 2 of the sororities I dropped If I had a clue this was going to happen.

No. You don't drop till bid day. If you put two houses lower and still got released, you were not high enough on those other houses' list. You would have been released anyway.

I went to 12 parties was invited back to all but 2 . when I next ranked I would have placed some higher on my list if I had a clue that I was going to be dropped by my legacy house Doesn't matter I got a great house. I'm just saying it's really hard when you come and you feel like you already belong some where and it doesn't work out. All that about being a good fit is just an excuse. I mean what do you say??? Just tell the truth...She didn't have the right zip code..This house knows who they want before rush even begins. So my advice to pnm legacies is unless you know several people in a house and have STRONG alum pull don't get blindsided.

It matters quite a bit to the old row houses. If not formal legacy, legacy connections.

i disagree. i was a legacy, and had connections to the house, and still got cut.. being a legacy WILL NOT get you into a house.
