sorority
by: 2016So I will be going to college in 2016 and right now my top two choices are Mizzou and Bama. I'm from OOS both places so I will be walking into a whole new work especially since I'm from up north. Anyways I know Bamas Greek system is one of the best if not the best and therefore most competitive in the nation. Being in a sorority is really important to me and I'm nervous I will not get in because I have no old row or even new row connections (really any connections at all) and I won't fit in and even though I am middle class, be able to afford the extravagances I know Bama sororities are famous for such as wearing gowns to formald rather than just nice dresses. Help?!

Ummmmm no they don't. We are college girls. We wear whatever we can find. Whether that's a forever 21 gown or a prom dress from high school. Idk who you're talking about. Yes, people here have money but some of us are middle class and I know I don't drop that much money on long dresses that will be ruined the second my date spills his drink on me

Sororities at Alabama aren't all about how much money you can throw around or who you know. Well, you need recs if you really want to up your odds at any house, but finding an alumnus of any sorority to write you one shouldn't be too hard if you just ask around your hometown!
Just like I think you'll find at any school, the majority of the sororities here are about building a sisterhood and growing yourself through leadership, philanthropy, academics, and socialization so that when you graduate you're the shining example of the female college student. There's no need to be scared if you don't know people or you don't have a vacation home in the Keys, because there around hundreds of girls just like you coming in with similar qualities. If you think you have what it takes to join some of the best sororities in the nation, then try Alabama. We're a school for winners, and you could be one too. Walk humbly, but don't let anything stand in your way.

Hey girl, PLEASE don't worry about those things!! First, there are sooo many OOS PNMs now that there are many girls who don't have any connections to old row or new row houses, but they still have very successful recruitments! If you can, make every effort to attend Panhellenic Preview Weekend in the Spring-this will give you a chance to see what sorority life is all about, check out the houses, and meet actives in all groups! This can also help you get on the sororities' radars, so to speak, and you may end up being invited to spring teas and other fun events so members can get to know you better. Also, please get 2 recs for EVERY chapter if at all possible. Recs are absolutely essential and really help chapters to determine whether they think you could be a good fit. Also, please don't worry about being middle class!!! Most UA girls aren't living in mansions, wearing nothing but Lilly and Yurman, and driving new BMWs. Sure, some are, but you'll be able to figure out which groups these girls tend to be in very quickly, and the other groups could care less about those things. So you should still have lots of wonderful options, regardless of how much money your family has :). Just make sure you have great grades/ HS activities/volunteer work, RECS, a polished appearance (doesn't have to be expensive-just think classy and classic, and look your personal best), and try to be as outgoing, friendly, and fun as possible. Also, remember to keep an open mind to ALL groups. Good luck!

you have been so helpful! I think i read have the people start sending recs in May? And can recs be from girls currently in sororities? I was so nervous thinking sororities down in Tuscaloosa would be very cliquey judgey and unaccepting but I am glad to have been proven wrong. So I can start getting in contact with sororities now because I know there is a no contact period starting some time in summer up until recruitment. I am so excited to begin this process. Thank you!

Girl, you are amazing. I'm an OOS PNM from the Atlantic coast area, and even though I really want to go to Bama, being in a sorority is super important to me. But I had no idea what to expect or do! So thank you so much for taking the time to give us advice!! What house are you in? I would really love to be your sister because you just seem so sweet and caring! Please respond!

A rec should be from a alumna member of that sorority, but she does not have to be from the Alabama chapter of that sorority. Start now asking around among your mom's friends, ladies you work with or go to church with. Keep a list of who and what sorority.
Missouri's recruitment is just as competitive as Alabama's, and you need recs there, too.
February is too soon for recs, but you can ask alumnae to let their chapter know about you via e-mail or written note. They need to include your contact info so that you can receive any invitations.
However, you do NOT have to come to any preview events or spring parties to have a successful rush!

i'm not trying to scare you, but i came in out of state not having any connections besides girls i met at preview and spring teas. i had a decent gpa and two recs for each house, some were alabama alum, and i even had the president of a sorority at a very prestigious school offer to write me a rec. I got dropped from 11/16 of the houses first round... so don't expect to be invited back everywhere you felt you had good conversations with due to having little connections. go through rush with an open mind, EVERY house here is incredible and honestly we all do similar things and there's not HUGE differences in houses since there's 350+ girls in each.

I'm sorry i didn't mean to stereotype I just heard you had a rep for really big and fancy formals. But besides that, what are opinions on my other questions.
