alabama is backwards...

by: Messed up

As someone who does not go to this school, I hope you realize how backwards you shaming Alpha Phis video is. Many of you cited that it was disrespectful to women. Are you kidding? It is incredibly disrespectful to women to tell them what they should and shouldn't do/wear because they are a woman. This is 2015. If a woman or man or anyone wants to walk around naked or fully clothed or anything, it's really not your business. That's how they're happy and if you guys have an issue with it, its usually a problem with your self-esteem. If you were truly happy with yourself, you wouldn't really care what other people did as much. Considering you guys aren't a very academic school,(you accept about half of all applicants...), you are extremely high and mighty.

Please don't judge our school based off the internet's articles bashing the video. If you had the insight to our campus, you would observe the lack of hype regarding it.

Do you know how ridiculous you look being critical of what someone says about a video at a house that's not even at your university. I hope you also know how disrespectful it is to tell others that they can't have an opinion. I'm a happy person and I have opinions. I don't know about your happiness but I see you have your opinions.

There are so many Alabama students on and off this board that have defended this video and these girls! To throw a whole university under the bus for the comments of a few is just plain ignorant.

I don't even go to Alabama, but I found this extremely offensive. I went to a small liberal arts school in the northeast and was in a sorority that likewise got a lot of negative publicity a few years back after an alum wrote an article detailing our most secret rituals, twisting facts, and making allegations of hazing, all in an attempt to further her career. It was an act of betrayal that put our entire chapter in jeopardy. But what I noticed was that the people who were the most critical weren't the other houses on campus; some of the GDIs were critical but the overwhelming majority of criticism came from outsiders, people who didn't go to the school and had no idea what they were talking about. It doesn't matter if the school is big or small, north or south, an attack on one Greek house is an attack on the entire Greek community. Having experienced it first hand, I know the Greek community at Alabama is rallying behind alpha phi right now because that's what being Greek is. So please don't make generalizations about the whole based on the comments of a few. Because I might not go to the school either, but I still know that what you're saying is wrong.

RETWEET^^^ I can't emphasize how true this is. I've experienced first-hand negative publicity and the media outlets are the only ones creating the hype and making problems out of nothing.

The Today show and NBC that had the biggest problem with it. If everyone is going to bash Alabama they might as well bash FSU, Florida, Arizona State, etc. The list could be endless. Everybody loves to hate on Alabama (Roll Tide) and lately on all Greek life in general.

Or maybe some of the people commenting raised legitimate concerns. For example one girl raised the concern of lack of diversity in the APhis shown on the video but the obvious AA status of the football player. If they have AA girls they should have been proud enough of them to let them appear. If they wanted to showcase football they should have all been watching practice or at a game or something. One black football player surrounded by blondes does look like exploitation regardless if that was intended or not.

Do you not realize the today show had their facts wrong? All "72" members of Alpha Phi? Because in no way is that true.
#2. People at this university aren't shaming the sorority, and you probably actually have no idea how our recruitment system works. So please, keep your comments to yourself unless you ACTUALLY know what you're talking about.

What exactly does the"obvious AA status of the football player" even mean? I mean OBVIOUSLY everyone is the color of their skin. I am thinking they chose him because he is a popular and recognizable player. I doubt the obviousness of his skin color (huh?) was the actual selling point. Perhaps Alpha Phis are the ones who are color blind and don't think skin color matters all that much and all the naysayers are the ones with race issues.

The outrage over this video started OUTSIDE of Alabama. The ridicule is on the international level. Yes the University issued a statement. What was wrong with the statement? It just pretty much said that the video is not the image the University was portrayed. NO other sorority on campus had a video like this. By that I mean one that only showed a small number of their members and portrayed an image of looks and partying...NOTHING else. Other recruitment videos showed diversity, fun, academics, philanthropy, Alum involvement, etc.

What I don't understand is why there was no outrage when ASU APhi had basically the same video last year. Well, I guess I do. The media loves to bash the state of Alabama and particularly the University of Alabama.

So if you aren't from Alabama and don't go to school here....go away....PLEASE

I don't go to Alabama either, but I have read comments about APhi on this page, and from what I read, people consider them to be airheads that only care about looks. let me tell you, at most schools, the sororities with most pretty girls is usually top. The media went wild and claimed that alpha phi is a prime example of how Greek life only cares about appearance. What the media didn't show is how your "top sororities" here go way beyond looks. You take girls specifically on what town their from. Do you know how crazy that is? You base it off of wealth, status, location, and looks. Maybe you get more "well rounded" girls in the top tier here, but maybe APhi bases their decisions more on the conversations they have and less on the other BS you guys take into account- like how many rec letters a PNM has.

Alpha Phi is last in grades. They are way below the university average gpa while most sororities are much higher than the average. At any institution of higher learning this is a problem. Girls can have fun and still get the job done in college. To imply otherwise is demeaning.

I didn't say you can't be good looking and smart, I said you guys don't consider APhi a "top tier" sorority even though they are gorgeous. at most schools, that would be the only reason a sorority is top. That's what I'm saying. Recruitment is a superficial thing, it's based on looks wherever you are- north, south, west. Doesn't matter. But choosing someone based on which town theyre from is only an Alabama thing. My point is, the media accused alpha phi of what every sorority does- wanting girls that are gorgeous, but they conveniently left out that Most Alabama sororities (alpha phi not being one of them) chooses girls based on how much money they have, which town their from, or which church they went to. All things that girls shouldn't be judged on.

The jealousy shown on this site about APHI is completely amazing. It is just on and on and on and on. More negative comments = more people talking about APHI. You serial APHI haters....wise up. Your continuous posts keep people talking about APHI - which is a big win for a newer sorority. You helped them achieve a great pledge class. Probably the opposite of your intentions.

I find it funny that "messed up" comments on Alabama's academic standards when she can't even write using correct grammar.
