PMN Legacy question

by: zxcvb

Hi all, I'll be a freshman next year and am a double legacy through my mom and sister of a sorority that has a chapter at bama, but we are also from out of state and the greek life at my mom/sister's school seems almost nonexistent compared to this school. I know recruitment is very competitive here that legacies do not really mean much anymore, and also the chapter where I am a legacy is considered "old row" and it seems from reading here it's impossible to get in to those types of houses without connections.
My question is, is it possible to only let the house where I am a legacy know of my legacy status, or is legacy something that I need to report when I sign up for recruitment and is then given to every house? I guess I'm convinced that me being a legacy won't matter at all given how competitive process seems to be, and my fear is if all the other house are aware that I'm a legacy of a different house, they will also drop me thinking I'm only interested in the legacy house. I'm just nervous I'll ending up with nothing lol so if it's best I will just not include the legacy part since it seems not to matter anyway given the competitive nature of recruitment here. My sister said she only let her sorority know about my mom's status, but greek life at the school they went to is small and not at all competitive so I'm not sure if all schools do it that way?

Well it's refreshing to see you are realistic in knowing that legacies are not a guaranteed bid because so many think otherwise. But you're right especially without connections don't rely on it. For old row, chapter legacy is a bit more helpful but I know you said your family members didn't go here so again I wouldn't rely on it. However, they do matter at varying degrees based on the house and could still help put you on the radar even if it's to a small degree so I wouldn't say it doesn't matter at all. It's good that you recognize it's not a guaranteed bid but I'd still include it. Houses take girls all the time that are legacies of different houses so don't worry about going bidless just because you're a legacy elsewhere. Also keep in mind since you noted that greek life was different at school your family attended, you might find the house they were in isn't the best fit for you at this school so definitely keep an open mind and you'll end up with a bid somewhere!

YES I can't stress enough how important it is for PNMs to make sure they clean up their IG, tik tok, etc. If you want to go through recruitment and your socials are public, just automatically assume that actives will be looking at your posts/content. Regardless of tier, no house wants to risk bidding a problematic member so be mindful if your accounts are public.

I am glad you posted something because I've been thinking the same thing. I'm a legacy at AXO, but not the chapter at bama. I am trying not to set my sights on it because I know how hard it will be to get in, but it was super important to my mom and all of her best friends (like the people with vacation with every year) were her sorority sisters. She even got into her line of work (director at a domestic violence agency) through her sorority.

I love bama and I know it's where I want to be, I just hope Greek life works out for me.

AXO no longer gives legacies any preferential treatment. This is a national policy.

Re: Legacy. Thanks for letting me know. It prompted me to look at the national website! I guess it makes things more fair for everyone..and it's probably better that if I'm going to do this I have a completely clear/open mind.

If I don't have any public social media, should I change that before rush? I don't have a tik tok account and my Instagram is private...but I could make it public if that would help people get to know me.

Stay private. If you have kept your SM appearance private for xyz years why change it now? Just for Bama rush?

If you have an Instagram that is private, you can keep it private. But, you will still want to archive any misleading posts ( inside jokes posts, anything with too much of a party vibe, anything bashing other ppl) if you accept requests from sorority actives. However, you might want to make a second account that is more public/pr friendly and put one or two posts on that. Use that account in the Bama 2026 group. Add a couple of posts through the year. Some people might say “oh, but you’re not letting the house see the “ReAl YoUuuuu”.” Instagram is already pretty filtered. Houses want to see the best representation of you. And, know that YOU know the difference.

Her question about submitting tec/legacy form to the intended house vs. the form every chapter receives- did other legacies do that as well? Is that possible? No one has addressed that part and I was curious as well.

There is no point in letting other houses know your legacy status. It doesn't help you at all and could even give other houses a reason to think your legacy house is your top pick. Just tell your legacy house through their national form or through a rec writer.

To my knowledge, most sororities have a section in their national recommendation form (completed by an alumna) regarding legacies. The chapter, if they choose, may use this information to make sure that the pnm doesn’t “fall through the cracks” during the first cuts, but this doesn’t guarantee an invite to prefs.
In the end it’s about mutual selection and whether or not you and the chapter are good fit.

But it also gives us an out of we’re not interested to release the PNM before pref.

Why’d you downvote this? It’s true.
