What chapter would you like to see on campus next

by: Pookie

Another year another 2500+ PNMs. Love our big houses but can we get the PCs a little smaller?? Who would you like to see next once SK gets up to total?
AZD I think would make the most sense since they are also at auburn already.

AZD is definitely the only other sorority that could afford to establish a chapter here. Maybe ASA but not likely.

ASA has no big chapters on the south. Their biggest chapter is in Delaware not even at a big 10 or pac12 school đź«

I agree alpha xi would be the most likely candidate, and if not them then tri sigma…. The rest of the Panhellenic sororities do not have enough national support to thrive and be successful at UA. Honestly though I feel like there is more than enough chapters. Being a new chapter puts you at a big disadvantage with recruitment. Your nationals is basically going to determine the type of girls the chapter will be like based on who they get to start the chapter. Those girls have to market themselves so well and establish a reputation where it won’t seem like they’re just taking girls who were dropped from recruitment and get a ton of people to join before they could successfully do formal recruitment, and they would need a house that is not only attractive to live in and claim, but realistically be able to have enough members who would join to pay the mortgage and cover the fees of maintaining it. Newer chapter like Aphi and DG are large and notable so they were able to make starting successful chapters possible, but tbh even for them it still sounds like a very stressful thing to accomplish. SK is still gaining momentum, but they are capable of being fully functional and giving girls an enjoyable sorority experience. ASA, DphiE, AEPhi, Phi Sig, SDT would just not simply be able to provide the resources and financial support to make that possible.

The difference is SDT has a big ALABAMA alumni base. AZD could possibly too but we missed out on inviting them back in time for their members from the 80s to be motivated to get their chapter back on campus by the time their daughters came to rush. So DG and SK had huge campaigns to raise money for their houses. And their alums delivered! I think SDT and AZD could do the same. But SDT locally just isn’t motivated and it’s annoying.

They did well because they were the two largest sororities on campus at the time. No, I was not here when DPhiE closed in 1973, but the mothers and grandmothers and other Bama alumnae who were will tell you all about it if you care to hear. The same thing happened to DPhiE at UGA and they rechartered again 5 or 6 years ago.

They can’t get their nUmbers up because they don’t do formal rush or have a nice house. Sigma kappa had 0 girls and they recolonized. SDT could recolonize but they won’t. That’s the t.

For SDT to “re establish” on the row, they’d have to force current girls into alum status and do a whole recolonization like SK. SDT doesn’t want to make their actives go early alum if they don’t want to. It’s actually considerate.

Their alumnae give them tons of support and have a huge emotional investment in helping them stay open. One of their charter members went on to serve as SDT's national president and holds a place of honor and respect in the organization. (One of their most prestigious undergraduate awards is named in her memory.)

I think their national would prefer it if they could compete on equal footing with the other houses, but starting from scratch would be a huge undertaking, both in terms of money and PR, not to mention they would get tons of backlash from the alumnae.

Tri Sigma struggles at big Greek schools. At Auburn they're basically like SDT here. They've struggled for years at Mizzou and are currently down to less than 100 members. They closed down at UNC last year, and at UVA they were reorganized a few years back (their national made the actives go alum and recruited a new chapter from scratch).

SDT needs to get their act together and start acting like a Panhellenic sorority. I don’t know how they’re the only ones that can just fly by without having to do any of the work. I genuinely think they’d be successful if they put in the effort, but they don’t.

If a new chapter colonizes, it should be tri sig.

That’s great and all, but we all have to take part in things as a part of Panhellenic, so can my chapter just opt out of stuff too? Like I don’t really feel like submitting our service hours and activities it’s a lot of work with sooooo many members. If SDT can just opt out of stuff, can my house too?

AXiD was on campus from 1927 to 1972 and again from 1981 to 1988. They were the bottom house both times they were on campus, and other Greeks were extremely cruel to them over the years. Not surprisingly, it affected their ability to recruit, and eventually they had to leave campus due to low numbers.

AXiD presented with DG and Alpha Phi during the last big extension in 2007. Supposedly they're not interested in trying again, but they're the best choice out of all the NPC groups that aren't currently on campus.

I think Tri Sigma would be awesome! They are smaller nationally, but it was originally a teaching sorority and joined PC in the 1950s, considering that, I think they have done really expanding. They are Southern and purple violets and pirate ships are adorable.

By: History
by: @ HistoryAug 10, 2022 12:03:10 PM

I doubt they would want to gamble on colonizing here. The chapter at Mizzou is on its last legs, but they've been in over their head financially for years trying to pay for their house. Auburn was different because they didn't have housing to think about.

Southern? Virginia is not exactly the deep South, lol. They are bottom tier at UVA and always will be. UVA students are extremely status conscious because they were all in the top 10% of their graduating class, and think they're too good for Tri Sig.

AXiD seems like the best choice since they've presented before and their USC chapter has been doing pretty well so far. The question is whether they want to try again.

DPhiE got turned down when they presented in 2013, but they wouldn't have tried in the first place if they didn't think they could pull it off. Their only notable failure in recent years was the Georgia Southern chapter.

Tri Sigma may not want to press their luck based on how badly the Mizzou chapter has struggled.
