Newbie with questions

by: Bama bound

Please don't attack me for this question but wasn't sure where to start. I just committed and am interested in rushing. I was told by another girls Mom that rush is brutal at UA. She said with me being out of state my chances of getting selected by a house are small. I am from Florida, high GPA and involved. Is there truth to any of this?

Are you pretty / thin? If so, that helps...

Rush can be a tough process full of emotion.

But coming from out of state can actually make it easier. Not so much pressure to get selected by “specific” houses.

All the houses are really great. And almost everyone does get a bid if they stick with it.

Thanks for the advice. Just curious what makes it so brutal? Are girls mean or is it that you get your hopes up for a certain house, them get dropped?

Even when you come from out of the area, you will have houses you like better than others. And cuts are made and you may not get selected by them.

For some, who don’t get full cards, which mean you don’t get invited back to the max number of houses in a round, it can seem particularly “emotional”.

Keep your perspective - you interacted only for a few minutes with these girls. There are 400 girls in each house. And you’ll find your place.

You’ll do great!

And you’ll be nervous, but try to enjoy it. It’s a pretty unique and amazing process.

Relax and focus on where you seem to connect best. It will be fine and provide a life full of memories and friends.

There are mean, shallow girls everywhere. Just be yourself and you will be fine.

Just don't wear those diaper looking shorts and you will do great!

The answer to your question, is what makes it brutal is there so many girls rushing, more than any other school and each house it limited to how many girls they can take, so the more recs you have the better your chances. Not any rec but direct chapter recs. Certain houses place priority heavily on direct house legacies from towns in Alabama because girls from those places will most likely stay connected to the chapter.

Having said that, if you have the grades, personality, the appearance you will find a house for you as long as you don't buy into the crap that certain houses are better than others.

if you put your best foot forward and engage with an open mind everywhere you’ll get a bid SOMEWHERE it may not be the most “prestigious” house but you’ll fit where you fit, the main people who don’t get a bid are major academic risks, girls who are PR risks (if you went to a frat party in high school and they know about it), or they just don’t try - they want one house and don’t give anyone else a shot and when they get dropped no one else wants them because they acted at first uninterested and showing interest later is fake, and no one wants fake
