Yes, grades matter. Unless you personally know actives in the house, grades are going to be one of the very first things houses look at. Good grades (high 3.0s and 4.0+) are very desirable and houses will definitely be mindful of you. Average grades (mid 3.0s) obviously aren’t as desirable but they’re definitely still strong. Low grades (low 3.0s and anything below) are very concerning to houses and many houses have rules in place where they have to cut girls who are under a certain GPA (usually 3.0).

I’m not sure what actives are saying grades don’t matter but they definitely do. I know some houses (ZTA, APhi, DZ, GPhi) are more “relaxed” on grade requirements but ultimately all houses want girls with good grades.

How are Pi Phi & Phi Mu with grades? I have a little below a 3.3 right now

idk how they are gpa wise but I know no house likes ones who come in with their top two houses already selected

Maybe they were just saying those two because the person who posted the thread mentioned a couple sororities and those two weren’t named?

Phi Mu isn’t too strict on grades especially compared to other Old Row houses. When it comes to PM, ultimately if you really fit their “type” or if you have in house connections then they’ll definitely keep you around. I’d say Pi Phi is essentially the same... Pi Phi is like Zeta in the sense that their “type” is fun, big-city girls but Pi Phi is definitely more conscious of grades than Zeta is. The majority of girls that get bids to PM & PBP have a GPA that ranged between the mid 3.0s and 4.0s.

And to the other question - all GPAs are unweighted.

yes it matters. obviously in the chat they won’t say that. they’re not supposed to flat out say it about gpa so they won’t be willing to say it to u in the chat because then their name is attached. on here it’s anonymous so we don’t care giving u the real answer

its really hard for me to believe every girl with below a 3.2 ends up dropped or just with 1-2 “bottom” houses left. don’t some of the more “bottom” houses like theta have better grades than houses like zeta?

It’s way more likely for girls with low GPAs who don’t keep an open mind to come in and only have 1-2 bottom houses left and withdraw because they don’t like their options. But this absolutely happens every year

The bid rate here is in the high 90s, I think... so the vast majority of girls who rush get bids... and of the small percent of girls who don’t get bids are almost always girls who willingly withdrew from rush.

So this means that, yes, even girls with low GPAs get bids. How does this happen? Some girls have in house connections who have enough pull to keep them through rush. Other girls are simply attractive/fun and houses (especially Zeta & APhi) want them to maintain their “house image.” Other girls are only left with 1 house at the end of rush and that has is obligated to extend a bid to her.

Having a low GPA doesn’t mean you automatically won’t get a bid, it just means you’ll have slimmer options.

just throwing it out there, not even zeta will keep around every girl with low grades. I had a 3.1 and didn’t even get kept by zeta first round with two rec letters, both written from bama alumni and know a few girls in house. and yes, i do fit the “mold” of what people say zeta is looking for. I maintain my appearance and looking presentable, was a varsity cheerleader at my high school and very involved with yearbook club and other things and still got dropped by them. I agree that as a house, grades are not their focus and they consistently are in the bottom few houses per grade reports. But, I also would agree that during rush of 2020, they took a bit of a rebranding approach and dropped TONS of girls that you would totally expect to be kept. Are they going to still have low grades, probably. but this past recruitment they did not behave how they typically do.

Zeta prob didn’t keep you bc you didn’t fit their type. Zeta, and a few other houses, are NOTORIOUS for bidding grade risks. Zeta isn’t too strict about recs, they’re a lot more conscious about appearances.

Having a low gpa doesn’t mean u won’t get a bid, but it absolutely affects your options. You have to keep an open mind about all the houses if you’re going in with low gpa. Almost all girls who don’t get a bid drop because they have 1-2 houses they don’t want left. Actives on a group chat have incentive to lie to you. Nobody anonymous has any reason to care

Grades matter, but only so far. Do your grades make the houses National cut off? Do your grades make the chapters preferred cut off? I will say if your unweighted gpa is above a 3.6, your grades will pass all of the above and the rest relies on the rest of you. My BFF had a 4.3, presidential scholar and was dropped by houses that I kept at a 3.5. After grades, it comes to fit.

And, some houses, especially OR, will hold on to legacy girls who don’t make their grade cut offs to make sure they do or don’t use a grade exception on them. There is a lot of paperwork involved, so it doesn’t just happen unless there are many girls pulling for her. Many.

Grades are important. Houses here are competitive and are always looking for ways to improve their standings when compared to other houses. Houses can say they are the top, the funnest, or the prettiest, but those are subjective. Grades, on the other hand are concrete, and since UA prints grade reports every semester for Greek chapters, very easy to compare houses in this category. While UA is a party school, the focus is on academics and UA has worked hard to bring in a lot of elite students who value grade standings. The Greek community knows this, so one of the easiest ways to stay strong in this very public category is to recruit smart members. Some houses even have a higher grade cut-off then published. Also, bear in mind sororities begin recruitment with a list of 2000 and must end with a list of 100ish. The easiest cut is to put the list in grade order and cut the women at the bottom who will bring down your house’s published GPA. Remember, Grades are the one real, concrete ranking list at Alabama...they are important.

With 2000+ girls rushing, grades are an easy way to manage the numbers. Especially after the first round. Grades DO matter.
