International Students Rushing
by: helpI'm an international student from England coming next year and I was thinking of rushing. I have a good GPA and involvement but I dont know anyone involved in greek life so idk how to get recs. I was also unsure of international students are allowed to rush and I dont see any on social media either. Can anyone help?

International girls rush!! My house has had 2 I can think of while I’ve been there. The one international girl I knew in my house faired very well and made friends easily. I think it honestly helped her because people thought it was so cool she was from across the world (it was a cool country). She also was just a nice, normal, fun girl that everybody got along with and that’s why we gave her a bid, but it definitely made her more memorable

Honestly I didn't have much recs at all since I didn't know much people. I rushed as a sophomore and had friends in three houses. They knew alumni members that offered to write one for me. I also had a friend who's mom was an Alpha Gam and she wrote one for me too. Either way I ended up going to a house I didn't have a rec for. So overall I had 4 recs and got a bid from a house I didn't have a rec for.
However, knowing what I do now, I wished I rushed as a freshman and reached out to houses earlier (like senior year of high school). I advise you to start reaching out to sororities now and inquire how to go about getting recs, since I doubt that you know anyone here as yet. I also recommend rushing as a freshman, because I personally feel like your options are more limited as a sophomore. However my situation worked out for the best and I love my house

Get recs through reddit. r/sororities has a recommendation megathread with alumnae willing to get to know you and write
You will need a rec from 1-2 alumnae for each house on this campus. Only people who are initiated members from that house can write recs. Alumnae can definitely write recs. Some sororities also allow actives to write recs.
But look on the r/sororities rec letter megathread and contact alumnae who have volunteered for their respective sororities

I'm OOR (so not international but still didn't know anyone in a sorority). I used r/sororities. Its reddit's forum to connect alumni with pnms to write recs. I got about 6 recs from there but ended up joining a house I didn't have a rec for so its obviously not super important if you don't have.

Def not the most important but my house does look at letters of rec and during the first few rounds are infinitely more likely to drop someone who doesn’t have them. When there are so many great girls coming through sometimes that can be the difference in staying or getting cut. Not the end of the world to not have but still worth trying to get as many as you can just so you’ll have the best shot possible

no most people in my area dont go to college let alone go to one abroad so it's a bit tricky
