Can someone explain the difference between old row and new row. Also which houses are which?

Old Row are the houses that generally are considered to have the highest social standing, but the concept is fairly dated.

It has become a short hand for the following group: Alpha Gam, AXO, Chi O, DDD, Kappa, KD and Phi Mu.

New Row is everyone else.

Old Row tends to have the highest proportion of in-state members and, I would guess, all have a higher percentage of in-state members that any of the New Row houses.

The most “traditional” of the Old Row houses are also those that have the highest number of in-state members, both in their pledge classes and their chapter officers. These would be Alpha Gam, Chi O, DDD, Kappa, KD.

AXO and Phi Mu are the old row houses that have the most out of state members, but they still have more in-state than any New Row.

Hope this helps.

Guys and women from the South in who are 35 and older are the only ones that count. Doesn't have the same prestige as Daughter's of Confeds.

For the millionth time.....

Sororities are not old row - as some one will point out - only fraternities are Old Row. That being said most people consider AXO, AGD, DDD, KKG, KD, XO and Phi Mu old row sororities.

These are not the “oldest” sororities on campus. The list developed with twists and turns, including an era of Budweiser sponsorship that some houses elected not to participate in. That sponsorship no longer exists.

It is not the same as the machine houses. The machine includes old and new row.

Old row has tradition and remains somewhat preferred amongst in state (and Deep South) girls with a history of being the better houses in that they attracted the girls from the “better” Alabama (deep south) areas and had better social schedules.

As the university has diversified and brought in more out of state and out of region students, and built nearly equivalent sorority structures for everyone, the separation of these houses has decreased and many houses now share equivalent surroundings, wealth, talent, etc although new row is more geographically diverse.

Think Mercedes (old row) and Lexus (new row).

Old row may include Mercedes and BMW, but also Volkswagen, Volvo and even Saab!

New row Lexus and Tesla, yes, but Honda and Hyundai too! .

the difference is that new row constantly obsesses about old row on this site, but old row doesn't obsess about new row anywhere.

But you do feel superior for being in Old Row, as
clearly implied by your post.

So no one should believe you dont care! And it’s fair to suggest YOU actually are obsessed by it!

see? you are obsessing again about someone you imagine feels superior and who must be an old row member. if you didn't feel inferior, you wouldn't need to obsess on that theme.

Budweiser used to sponsor an “old row” party with a select few fraternities. On poster is correct in that sororities are not really old row. Those frats selected several houses to join them as part of old row. The party is no more, along with the sponsorship. But the name stuck. XO, AGD, DDD, KKG, AXO, KD, and PM are considered old row.

Has nothing to do with who has been here the longest. (aDPi has been here the longest but is considered NewRow)

"Old Row" frats and the sororities thought of as OR go back way before that. Way back AXO and PM were not considered OR.

KD is the first national sorority on campus. There was another one here before KD, but it was not a national sorority. It then merged or something with ADPi after KD was established. So ADPi has a lineage that is older here than KD, but they (as ADPi) have not been here as long.
