academics at fraternities

by: PH

I am coming to Alabama on Academic Scholarships. I am from OOS, and will only be able to rush through the remainder of this month. I realize I will probably be limited to those with slots yet to fill. Are academics recognized during the recruitment process? Secondly, are academic demands recognized during the pledge process? I would need to be sure to find a good balance.

Thanks!

So the idiot trolling on the front page gets responses? Seriously, I would appreciate some viable insight from true fraternity men. There is some rigor built into my first semester acedemic wise. I am participating in two honors programs, however also desire to join a fraternity as I am a social individual. I want to make sure the requirements of being a pledge don't interfere with the scholastic part and visa versa.

Thanks!

I cannot give you the most accurate advice, as I am a girl, but I am a member of an old row (1st circle) sorority,so I will try to give you the best advice that I can as a member of the greek community at UA. The pledge process for each fraternity is very different, some more demanding than others. If you feel your academic schedule is going to be too demanding then I wouldn't recommend joining a fraternity as it does require a serious committment. Contact each house's rush chairman and go through rush. Look and see if the brothers of the fraternities you are interested in are in similar academic programs, that should be a good indication if their pledge process is compatible with your academic needs or not.
And by all means if you want an honest response from anyone and a decent social life at UA, then please be polite. Your second post was a little pushy and that attitude will not be well received at a traditional southern school like Alabama. I'm not trying to be mean, just giving some advice. Furthermore, since you are smart I'm sure you will be able to figure out which houses are right for you without having to just rely on anonymous posts from this site. I hope you enjoy UA and find a house right for you.

Thank you so very much for your response. Your insight is much appreciated. I completely understand your comments about being pushy, and apologize if anyone was offended. As you might imagine, I am very anxious and I thought my inquiry was going to be buried behind some other posts that appear to simply be meant to incite.

Thanks again!

I'm glad it was helpful! No apologies needed, I just wanted to offer some constructive advice. But thank you! Good luck and welcome to UA!

Perfect answer, emphasizing look at fraternities with guys in the same programs/majors as you since they will also understand the demands between school and pledgeship.

I will be majoring in an Engineering Program that has a good amount of research commitment to it. Ultimately I hope to end up in Med School. Any ideas which fratnernities might have members with a similar pathway?

I didn't want my inquiry to be buried on the second page of the board. Any suggestions on houses based on the following:
