Yes. I got one of my top 3 choices. You just need to be open minded!

But you MUST be open to every house.

Even freshmen usually don't get the house they "pick" as #1 before rush and it is far less likely for a sophomore. After seeing how much fun greek life is from the outside, just be happy to get a bid from any house that gives you a chance at sisterhood!

i wasnt talking about my #1 pick before rush i was talking about the houses i would see as my favorites DURING rush...yeah greek life does seem fun, but i would never just BE HAPPY joining a sorority that i didnt feel like i could fit in with, just for the sake of a "chance at sisterhood"

i dont really understand the condescending under tone that your comment had? i was just asking if sophomores had the chance to get into a sorority that they really saw themselves getting along with...

think that person was being condescending, I think they were trying to give honest advice. A lot of upperclassmen go through thinking they're big shots and they get dropped completely bc they're stupid about it. Which I'm sure you won't be. Sophomores actually have a pretty good chance since we do have an upperclassmen quota. Last year, I think something like 85 out of 120 got bids. I know it doesn't sound great, but if you pick out all the girls who rushed previously and did horribly/made bad grades/bad reputation/don't have recs, your odds are pretty damn good.

Good advice here.
Quotas aren't set until the pref parties are over, and even then it's on a sliding scale. Plus a sorority can choose to take no upperclassmen. You can't do anything about it, so don't worry about it. Concentrate on your conversation skills, wardrobe, and getting recs for every group.

I don't think all of the houses take upperclassmen, but if that's the case, they will probably cut you after the first round. So you'll know early on. You will not be considered next to the freshmen, because you would be filling a different quota than them - which can be both a good and a bad thing. They might ask you, or at least ask themselves, why you didn't rush as a freshman though, so maybe have somewhat of an answer to that. One of my bestfriends from my pledge class rushed as a sophomore and she got her top pick!

I don't think she was trying to be condescending, but just honest about the process. In these big, competitive recruitments, all PNMs need to be open minded. The truth is that most everyone loses a or some favorites, whether they had them going in or fell in love during the process. You'd be surprised at how many PNMs don't realize this will likely happen, so it's just natural to mention it so they'll be prepared.:) All chapters at Bama have a lot to offer, and all are big, so many women do feel they'll be able to fit somewhere within many of them -- that's why you're advised to be willing to give them all a chance. Favorites can change as the week goes on and you meet more members and learn more about the chapters. So as long as you're getting invites back, stick with the process. Then, if after pref, you know for sure that a place is not right for you, you don't have to indicate that you'd accept a bid. Many minds have been changed at pref, though, and plenty of PNMs have come to love houses they originally didn't see themselves in. Good luck during your recruitment!

Be fine! I was as a sophomore last year and had a "perfect rush" almost by numbers, like getting the max invites back... And I had strong recs and a little above average GPA.

Just be yourself and be happy to be going through, it was nerve racking but not a bad experience, you'll be fine! Be open to every house though

it's important to make note that even the policies of some houses make them less wonderful to some girls. In Alpha Phi or Zeta, you can pretty much get away with murder, but Tri-Delt , Pi Phi, and Phi Mu are completely different stories. You'll understand as you go through if you belong with the stricter houses or the more casual ones

of the houses have stricter rules and guidelines. It's not a bad thing. It actually keeps the reputation of the house in good standing. Other houses are a little more loose about that stuff. That said, they all have rules and if you're out at a bar dancing on the tables with your top off... you're not going to have a nice chapter meeting that week
