I am taking classes at a community college over the summer to help out a 2.8 GPA, how much will sororities consider the classes I took over the summer if my GPA from the community college is a 4.0? Will it help a lot or does it not really matter since I already got a 2.8 in high school?

I'm an alum and do lots of recs. I hate when a PNM has a lower GPA but took advanced classes at a hard school. I worry it will cause automatic cuts when she'd actually have much to offer Greek Life and do fine academically. I know PNMs who showed up at rush with 3.5's or above, only to struggle in class and feel unprepared for college. I also know those with 3.0's who did fine because their high school had heavy rigor and required good discipline/ study skills/time management. You also meet those who carried strong GPAs because helicopter parents kept them on track 24/7. When they got out from under the hovering, grades sank. Finally,some have book brains, but miss the common sense to come in from the rain, or have the social skills of a log.

Sorority nationals have minimum GPAs for chapters. It's 2.7 for mine, but some only require 2.5. (You can view at national websites. It's open info.) Chapters are free to set minimums higher than what nationals accept, though, and many do. Some alumnae advisers are encouraging them to look at a PNM's big picture/circumstances and not just automatically drop the ax because of lower GPA. Still, we're sympathetic to pressure chapters are under with release figures and time frames. GPA helps manage the crowd in big recruitments.

Remember, lots of PNMs with amazing GPAs also get harsh cuts. ALL need to take #10's advice. Open mind, best foot forward. And get recs! Good luck to the original poster.
